German release - comes with Press Kit.
Producer: Kramer, Engineer: Steve Watson, Tracks: Alice; Ugly Roses; Living in the Past; No Pain; Lose Regret; Ache For You; Did You Lie?; Talk to Her Sister; Fallen Hero; Shattered - III is, appropriately enough, Devils Wielding Scimitars third album. It's been seven years since their last album, though. They released the LP Curious Soul on their own Scared Guy label in 1989. They followed that with an LP/CD/CS, Worry Dolls on San Jacinto in 1990 - I can remember spinning tracks from Curious Soul at WMEB when that album came out. What I remember of that album is that it had a rather enchanting, laid-back sound. III retains that vibe. Suzy Callahan manages to sound immediately familiar without creating a sense of deja vu. Her vocals, alternately, ride along with and propel the music. If DWS were jazzier they might sound like Kelly Hogan/The Jody Grind. There's a solid psychedelic aspect to their sound that, if they went a little further into it, would bear comparison to Tiny Lights, though Callahan's voice is very different from TL's Donna Croughn. If the music leaned more towards the blues, Callahan might recall Joan Osborne. None of these comparisons will allow for an accurate description of Suzy Callahan and Devils Wielding Scimitars, though. You'll just have to hear them for yourself "III"

IT'S GREAT WHEN a record can reach out and grab your pleasure-lobe from the get-go. In the case of El Paso's Sun Kings, "Hey Hey" is as pure and immediate a powerpop rocker as a Big Star or a Plimsouls classic, infused with a meaty, recurring riff and the insanely infectious "hey, hey" chorus chant. If that were the only decent tune on the Kings' debut it would still be guaranteed inclusion on some future compilation of lost gems from the late '90s powerpop revival. Lucky them (and us): the Kings frontload their record with electricity ("Believe," with its stomping, war-dance feel and minor chord changes, suggests a more rousing variation on the Smithereens' "Behind The Wall Of Sleep"); serve up a moody Tom Pettyesque jangler mid-disc ("Fallen Woman"); then go out on a heady wave of tremolo/twangy guitars and pulse-quickening thumpage (the neopsychedelic "Never Sent"). As produced by Luminarios/Sand Rubies impresario Rich Hopkins, this young band, pardon the obvious cliché, really does beam down bright rays of light--all the more refreshing in this era of dark angst and musical desperate "Adios"

Ken Andree's band (from El Paso) - great stoner rock - includes Moby Grape cover.
WOW! EXECUTIVE PRODUCER Stephen Baldwin--ya mean the Hollywood hunk and sometime-Tucson resident from the infamous acting clan?! You know this has to be good, right? Baldwin starred in Biodome, didn't he? - The semi-distorto rock guitars actually rip on this Tucson-based band's eponymous release. Opening cut "Let Me Down" kicks into high gear with a hypnotizing and rumbling bass romp that surrounds you in a lugubrious, rhythmic trance reminiscent of Leather Nun's "Prime Mover." Crisp, dynamic production from master knob-twirler Jim Waters invigorates White Chrome Splendor with a bright, shimmering tone that accentuates the occasional, albeit wickedly stimulating, wah-wah effects.
