The
thing about Blacky is he never knows how to completely go away. A
lingering mess. The band is his tribe... but he remains forever
unattached...at the same time. Like a sleepy rain god. Any how... January
seemed harmless enough. There was enough to do. Giant Sand demos to
finish... or the next record to finish itself. Impending Giant Sand tour
at the end of the month... 2 months abroad. The kid to look after... the
rimrock ranch sign to paint (still forgot that one), but somewhere in the
middle of it all..... Talking to Andy at Demon one early Friday morning...
"Long Stem Rant" has yet to surface... The next Sand LP can't
come out 'til September... That means "Blacky" has to fill the
gap.... I tell him, but the only possible time to record would be that
weekend. Get the O.K. from Andy. Get in the 'cuda and drive to Tucson that
afternoon. Let the record write itself on the way down. 8 hour drive, a
fistful of sage is plucked on the down ramp out of Joshua Tree
Monument...... just in case.
Special
thanks to Lucienda for singing...... it was a dream
