Thanks to Kate Hyman for
the severe pleasure.

Chore of Enchantment
ok now.
you are in a room with nothing but a candle.
no windows.
no doors you can see.
you calm yourself to be at peace with this lacking.
you begin to savor the candle.
it takes almost as long to do this as it does for your eyes to adjust to the
flicker light of the room.
and then there on the floor in the corner, you can just make out a silhouette
of a boom box.
you push play
this is the cd that begins to play.
the batteries are low.
they won't last more than an hour.
fortunately this record is 59 minutes and 59 seconds long.
but in truth, before you spied this boom box you have already found the way
to be at one with the room and candle and did not need anything else.
and it feels like a chore to get up from your place and reach into the corner
you hope you don't need it.
you hope it sucks.
but if it does enchant,
this too will be a chore.
- hop-a-long howe
