Album cover, Sand bio, and publicity shots at above link. Quoting John Parish: "You know sometimes you hear a song for the first time & it clicks so immediately that it's then impossible to imagine that it hasn't always existed - "Classico" from the new Giant Sand album is a perfect example. I've recorded this song three times in a year - the two versions that bookend Map & a third by Italian legend Nada for her new album, Tutto L'amore Che Mi Manca. Howe's lyrics on" Classico" and throughout the new record are typically unique, ranging from laugh out loud to painfully poignant, hitting all points bizarre in between. If there were only one person allowed to contribute further to the over-stocked pool of recorded music on this planet it should be Howe Gelb."

Mr. Gelb, the diary foreplay would be most welcome. As for my end of the farmer's market, I recently encountered a 60-year-old Japanese street musician named Hsiao, who plays a beat-up guitar given to him by Townes Van Zandt and stomps his feet as he plays. He's got 900 songs in two blue binders, and when I asked if he wrote a song a day, he answered, "I am a song." But that's whole 'nother story altogether.

George Harrison was always doing that.” Seemed funny at the time.

As a former card-carrying member of the Kiss Army, circa 1977, the Simmons Q&A was most welcome. Oops, gotta run...I think I heard Beth calling.

Date: Sun Jun 20 02:11
sorry (got too):
Q: Why did you wait all these years to do a new solo album? And why do you want to put out a 100-song boxed set of your solo material? A: It's finally time. Over the years, when we'd do a Kiss record, I would write 15 to 30 songs per album to get the four or five that might be used. Most of those songs were sitting around, and a lot of them didn't make sense in the context of Kiss. I want to put out a boxed set because I owe it to the songs. It's not fair that they're just sitting around. Q: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment? A: On a corporate level, having more gold albums in America than any other [American] band. On a personal level, I have to give the cornball answer and say getting up onstage with people going out of their minds and seeing different generations of people in Kiss makeup. It does put a lump in your throat, and it's heartwarming. Q: How do you respond to people who say the band isn't really Kiss unless it consists of the original members: you, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss? A: I used to believe that. Any rules we have for the band are rules we decide for ourselves. There are lots of bands that have lost members who people might have thought were irreplaceable, but the bands got replacements and the bands got bigger: AC/DC, Van Halen, the Rolling Stones, the Who. I love Ace, Peter and Paul. They helped me get to where I am. I hate myself for not standing up to Ace and Peter sooner when they were destroying themselves. Q: There's a perception that you are the business brains behind Kiss. What are your thoughts on that? A: Artists always forget the meaning of the word "business" in the music business. It means you sign your own checks. It means the record company works for you, not you for the record company. Once you delegate authority, it means you're diluting who you are; someone else makes business decisions for you. I don't like handlers, assistants and bodyguards, because they can't do things as well as I can. Q: Why didn't you assume the management of Kiss? A: Paul has a lot to do with Kiss' ideas. He's one of the best frontmen ever. There's a friendly, brotherly rivalry with us. If one of us goes a little too far, the other one wants to pull him back. So if I'm managing the band, where does that leave Paul? The thing that keeps this band going is the continuing and abiding respect that Paul and I have for each other. Q: Last year, Ace Frehley told billboard.com that it was deceptive of you and Paul Stanley to tour as Kiss without him. He asserted at the time that he was "into a health kick" and fit to play. What would you say to Ace right now? A: I hope you're happy, but you're not allowed to be in the band. There's no way we'd let you onstage and subject people to your erratic behavior. It doesn't matter if you're an original member. If you mess up, you're an ex-member. And that goes for me, too. Q: If Paul Stanley wrote his autobiography, what do you think he would say about you? A: He would say that I'm a workaholic and that I've got the biggest ego [of anyone] he's ever met. And I think he'd say, and rightfully so, that I get a lot of credit for ideas he came up with. Q: Can you give some examples? A: I didn't think of the name of the band. Paul did. I didn't design the Kiss logo. Ace did, and then Paul actually drew the original version, which is used today. Q: You did some reality-show segments with your family on "Extra" in 2002 that were similar to "The Osbournes." Would you still want to do a reality series now, considering the problems that Kelly and Jack Osbourne have experienced? A: The main problems with the Osbournes had to do with drugs. I'd still want to do a reality show about me, but not with my kids involved. Doing a reality show with them wouldn't be fair to them, because they wouldn't get a chance to be kids. Q: Can you explain why Kiss keeps touring even after your so-called final tours? Why call it a farewell tour when most people know Kiss will probably keep touring? A: We did a farewell tour when it was clear that Ace couldn't continue. But after the tour was over, it became fairly obvious from fans that they wanted us to continue. Rock bands are a lot like football teams: If a guy is on drugs and messes up, get someone else who's proud to wear the uniform and be part of the team. Q: What are the biggest mistakes artists make in their careers? A: Drugs, this time and every time. I wish more journalists would confront stars with drug problems. Q: What's your response to people who say there's too much Kiss merchandise? A: Actually, we haven't put out enough, because a lot of it sells out. So whoever says there's too much Kiss merchandise is not a marketing expert. Q: How would you describe yourself in one sentence? A: I love money, I love women, I like to work hard and I don't use drugs. advertisement More in Celebs Photo Galleries Celebrity Interviews Email This Page Avg. Last year he reactivated Simmons Records, which, along with the Kiss Records imprint, has teamed with Sanctuary Records Group for new releases. Simmons says he is developing a premium-cable entertainment channel, although he could not reveal details. He also has an A&E TV documentary in the works. On the literary front, he has formed Simmons Books in a joint venture with New Millennium. One title due under the deal is "Kiss & Tell," an autobiography from Simmons' longtime romantic partner, Shannon Tweed. (The publication date is yet to be determined.) Simmons also is reviving his long-dormant career as a solo artist. On Tuesday, Simmons/Sanctuary released "A------," Simmons' first solo album since his 1978 self-titled solo debut. "A------" features collaborations with Bob Dylan and Dave Navarro. Simmons says he also wants to release a 100-song boxed set of solo material he has recorded through the years.

Wise words Howe if I may be so bold. Some of us were there before John and Joey and saw that fruit grow. Giant Sand were there BC (before Calexico) and will continue to flourish as long as you do. Calexico are a fruitful bud on the tree and it's up to each individual to decide where to nibble. Not sute if I'm dramatic or a joker, possibly both, anyway remember the old saying, He who digs deepest, deepest digs.

Czech v Holland...first truely exciting game of the lot this year. It usually cheer for Denmark or the underdog of whatever game. Today I cheered for Czech. Maybe because I still remember the Dutch/Danish semifinal back in 1992 (still the most exciting soccer game I've ever seen). ### Mansion On The Hill...new GS? Well, Anders Pedersen, Thøger Lund and Peter Dombernowsky are onboard now. ### And if I could just get my cd-burner to work I could sent someone the latest gig in Copenhagen - where John Parish "sat in" for Peter. :-) Hmmm... ergo the ego. if a man sees naked people in a photo scene, he may think it's art, while another man will think it's pornography. the franklins and chiltons can take the face value of this scene and see the pornography of ego if that's how their mind works. i thought i was an id man myself. the real details of the split are personal and effect no one but the love triangle of the 3 of us involved. at best, it has allowed double the output, at worst....it is still entertainment to witness. everyone is always entitled to their opinion, especially on this page. this page is the very reason 'chore of enchantment' was released at all. it was the feed back from the comment-taters here (that had ordered the promo copies of that record) that inspired the actual release through thrill jockey, once it had already been dropped by V2. i value all the comments on this page. it is the only source of real communication to the people that care about these things. before the internet it was a mystery and a speculation. now its more like a history and an elation. john joe and myself are not egoists by nature, nor evil, nor unforgiving. mostly human and usually scattered. but the combination of this group has led to real toxins that began to eat away at the fabric of what made it to begin with. i met john and joe seperately when they were young and individual. you here on the page always refer to them like they were always a couple because you never knew them any other way. when i look back on the decade they were involved, i rejoice at the music made and have pride in their development. inviting them down to arizona was not a mistake either. a lot of how calexico works is to eliminate the things that were unfocused in giant sand land. lack of word play also aids in a more worldly appeal. but the business end of things had some real ill effects on the base camp here. some companies involved only with calexico had taken measures to remove things that were giant sand. the allowance of such developments is how the problems began here and where the toxins within formed. so the third decade begins, like the first, without the ilks of john or joe. if you can make out the credits on the last few records you can see how they began to be less and less involved. cover magazine was a fun way to say good bye. no one will feel the spoink as much as me, it was a brotherhood. but the next generation still feels the familia vibe. all of our children, including rainer's, john's and mine, all hang with each other like brothers and sisters. it's a stunning smile that emerges. (joe not having spawned yet might widen the gap between us some...but those of you with a work load of young'uns will know exactly why that is.) ....and this is exactly how life is. makes us ready to take our time and take our leave. everybody ok now ?....ok.....i did notice, however, how all the dramatic comments usually defend calexico...while all the comedians like to defend giant sand here. kinda like those theater masks ? .....love, no matter what -howe

Me and a group of friends went to see Calexico with full Luz de Luna backing at the Barbican in 2002. We really got into the so called 'cliched' spirit by smuggling in a hip flask or two of tequila. I would safely say that along with the Howe fest of the year before this was probably one of the best concerts I have ever been to and was enjoyed by everyone I was with, even those not previously familiar with the band. I would say that the Mariachi element was a major factor in our enjoyment. This show is coming out on DVD next month and I'm really looking forward to seeing it! Have I just blown my cool? Do I care!? Should you? ;) Paul

Lars (a taco explained...? :-D):
Yeah, flogging that poor old horse once again. I agree with James. ### Anyway, I agree that Calexico is not all mexicano. Still, a large part of what they have done over the years falls right into that mariachi-ish category that I know of....which my little knowledge of those genres. So, to me - who haven't set foot in the desert - this music SHOULD sound new and exciting. It doesn't. It fits into that mariachi-cliché that dominates outside the US and Mexico, I guess. Of course not all of it. Well, maybe it's not just all that, but the fact that I think it's all too nice and well-produced. I like it rough around the edges to stir things up a bit. Hm, and I guess the lyrics have improved over the years, but hey, if I - from far away Denmark - should write a song with a mariachi-guitar along and a bit of twang on the side my first choice for a lyric could easily be "I live out yonder where the snakes and scorpions run". And then throw in a bit of tumbleweeds and rails for good measure. I guess I would expect more nuances from someone who actually lives there. Maybe that's why my favourite is still "Travelall"....no lyrics and some of those "desert moods" produced more as sketches and with a few twists along the way. Hey, I love that record! :-D Hm, maybe the ears that listen would have to have a personal history or geography to add to the music. I just have Robert Rodriquez films. Not that I feel so terribly well connected to vikings over here. But well, that was longer ago. In all peacefulness: Greets! / Lars

Tenpole Tudor (Re: Lars):
Taco bell, huh? Nice to see an entire musical form and cultural perspective reduced to the dumbest of stereotypes, and by someone who has never even set foot in the desert southwest to boot. Even if Calexico isn't one of my favorite bands of all time, I'd still argue that the lack of adventure you mention, sir, seems a rather uniformed opinion. Pass some judgement after listening to the other musicians that Calexico have backed or played with, as well as paying some attention to the somewhat broad field of influences that range from curious remixes, found sounds, country, punk, blues, jazz, folk, and, yes, the dreaded "taco bell" sound that actually existed long before 59 cent gorditas were on the menu. But whether you like what they create or not, who really cares. However, reducing John & Joey's talents to cheap & cliched shots does little other than to illuminate the failings of the critic.

C'mon Lars, you know that variety is the soul of art (or some such vague proverb). Besides, substance determines style, not vice versa. The only way a story SHOULD be told is the way that particular story demands - and every one is different. There's a hell of a lot to be said for the straight-ahead approach to narrative too. Sometimes it's the best way. And speaking of movies and soundtracks (picking up on the Shrek 2 post), last night I watched 28 Days Later again on DVD and was (yet again) stuck by the awesome soundtrack. Not just the quality of the specific selections (Godspeed, Grandaddy, Eno and various classical pieces etc) but the way in which it truly married up with the images/narrative/theme of the film. A real all-round audio-visual amd emotional experience.

Anyone else heard it? ### By the way, because of my limited knowledge of country classics and the entire Giant Sand catalogue I don't know if it was a new Howe-song or not that was played recently in Denmark, where the chorus goes "A line has been drawn in the sand". It sounded somewhat familiar, but I could be mistaken. Anyone know that one? Plus: what's that fast "Roadrunner, roadrunner....500 miles an hour" song? Best greets! / Lars

Frank C atan (---- ------ ----- breaking the law ------ - ----- ?):
Alan, Tom and all, wow, this IS an interesting discussion. My problem that it gets way too sophisticated for my poor standard english. Anyway, Alan, I´d like to add Max Weber to your all star team of sociologists and philosophers who dealt with the social impact of religious systems. And, concerning the thesis "everything´s spirtual and religious somehow", I can´t accept that because it sounds too esoteric and boundless. If there´s spirituality in everything (a chair, a desk, a stone, a guitar, a Giant Sand record) it doesn´t mean anything besides "hey, everything´s connect somehow!" or sth like this. It doesn´t have consequences. Maybe there´s LOVE in it, but not religion. Religion always needs some kind of message, some rules to follow, a code, a history of its own, and most important, serious consequences how to lead a life. And you can look at the idea and tell if it´s worth believing or not. Maybe that´s why Christian rock sucks because rock with a content is mostly about QUESTIONING rules, norms and restrictions. I doubt if a Judas Priest song called "Following the law" would have been such a huge success. And, after all, it´s true that in terms of rocknroll the Devil is much cooler than his opponents. But, on ther other hand, there´s a fine line by German indie rockers tocotronic which goes "there´s only cool and uncool and how you feel". And at some time in your life you may find that the third alternative is the right one. Being cool doesn´t mean anything (besides being cool).... Okay, shut up, now, Frank....

Way back at the Café Mozart gigs there were some great Howe & audience situations. Remember writing them down for some reason. Can't remember why. Maybe because it was a little inaudible on the recording in places. ### Howe: I thought I remembered everything coming over here. But I forgot my tuner. Audience member: I have one. Howe: Yeah, but that's......too easy. There's something nice about tuning. ### Howe: Does it sound alright? Too loud? Too little? Someone in audience: Perfect! (pause) Howe: I can't work with that. ### Howe (to sound engineer - refering to a effect on the sound): Did you you put that shower effect on there? (pause) But I had one today. (Howe puts a hand through his hair which makes it stand up) Audience member: You don't look like it. (everyone laughs) (long pause) Howe: And that takes practice...! And I noticed that everyone in town is buying they jeans already worn-out. And paying way too much money for them. So.....this is the analogue way of doing it. (pause) But they're clean. (pause) ...Too. ### Howe (to David - the owner of Café Mozart): Is there a lemon in this? This holy beer? No lemon? Someone in audience: Try a chili. Howe (refering to his dinner earlier): That was a good pepper today, David. Gooood pepper. There were tears in my eyes. A tear actually dropped into my beer. Someone in audience: That sounds like a country song. (pause) Howe: If I had just eaten that chili. And had stumbled on you, walking home, being drunk in the gutter. That is the only way I'd be crying over you. (audience laughs) ### Howe introduces the whole band and the audience applauds. Then points to an audience member sitting next to a coat rack by the door and introduces him: ...And Mattheus on coat rack! (Audience applauds) Howe: Is your name really Mattheus? (pause) The guy: .....No. ### Yeah, never boring being at a Howe-gig, ha-ha! :-D / Lars

I agree the labels tend to not help. (Anyone ever have any luck describing Giant Sand's music other than "Giant Sand's music"?)Spiritual may be the closest word to describe the trip and still avoid "Us vs Them"-fare. Seems we are all searching for that same oblivion/nirvana/hole-in-the-wall-instead-of-yr-head. Find it where you will - motorcycle maintenance, rock and roll, rock climbing, dope, church, lotus tree - some are more, ahem, healthy than others. Intersting to debate, but you gotta move on yr own. By the way, front desk tom, God and Satan may both want your money but tell me who doesn't? The doctor you visit when you're sick? Your school or college? Your dentist? Your local grocery store? The movie theatre? Even your favourite band? They all offer something of value to you and require some exchange for it, whether that is because they are a profit-making business or simply in order to continue doing what they do. I guess God or Satan would accept some form of payment other than the financial, but whatever form it takes, the act of exchange is about as purely spiritual as it gets ...

james s (noted banter):
so Howe said to the audience person, "it's all religious music." Nice. A "best of" Howe to audience banter would be interesting... once reported here, and this one really sticks out in my head and I hope it's true...an audience guy yells out to Howe, saying "Tune your guitar." Howe pauses, shrugs, and asks "Why?". Classic, or as Lucinda might say in a song, "too cool to be forgotten."

Date: Thu Jun 3 13:02
tHom (seeking the shiver):
I think the musical/spiritual connection can be understood in terms of wavelengths. There's a general band of aesthetics (manifest in rhythm, melody, tone, harmony, even dischord etc) which more closely approximates the spiritual than the material, thus it communicates to the spirit and evokes a repsonse. Same goes for poetry, sculpture and even certain more visual artforms. Most people would agree that this works better for them when it isn't rammed down their throat in a literal manner, as is usually the case with Christian "rock" (though I guess we're all mostly going on assumption here, as I doubt many of us have actually listened to much of this stuff). But the same applies to most any kind of earnest and well-meant anthemic type of "message" dressed in popular music garb. The Beatles might just get away with singing "all we are saying is give a peace a chance", simply because they belted it out in a big choral arrangement and no-one could really disagree with the idea. But this kind of thing in rock music usually presents a conflict of style and content that fails, as well as coming across as flat and dogmatic and a bit obvious (in the "goes without saying" category). But there are some truly beautiful hymns, lyrically and musically, in the Christian canon - and some of the most moving and spiritually evocative music I've ever heard was written for the Church (Mozart, Bach et al). Of course, if you consider spirituality to eb a fact of life, then you can find it in just about anything ...

Date: Thu Jun 3 11:26
stefan ((check out CocoRosie, there are mp3's on the site!)):
I think music can be spiritual without mentioning God in any way. At a Middle East Underground show, Howe said to someone in the audience who wanted to sing „church hymns, religious music“: „It’s all religious music.“ It’s the attitude not the label. My feeling is that the more emphasis people put on the label, the less actual spirituality you find. Good title (and record) by Timebold’s Whip: „Atheist lovesongs to God.“ Maybe „Christian rockers“ make spiritual music as well, I don’t know, I’ve always given them a wide berth.

Graham (when Jesus was our savior and cotton was our king):
Saw Billy Joe Shaver myself last week, Blaine, and there was a heavy dose of evangelicism in his performance. It's certainly believable, though, in context of his tale of blowing holes in the bedroom wall instead of his head. Sinners make the best spiritual music--Bukka White in jail praying with a National steel is more believable than a gelled hair Baptist youth group band. Coltrane and (some) Dylan and Cash and Fahey and scores of blues and country musicians--David Eugene Edwards is no different. 16 Hp shows are the most intense I've ever seen. But I accept it from these folks because it's a demanding muse, like addiction or a broken heart or whatever. Christian pop & rock is offensive and condescending and pandering--as is most pop--but sincere writers and musicians wrangling their existential demons are alright by me.

The Devil loves L.A., it's true. He's got a big ol' house in Beverly Hills, not too far from the public toilet where George Michael got busted. Weirder still, God lives a little further east in San Marino. I've driven by His place, but the gates are so big and shiny it's impossible to see inside. I've heard the parties there are insanely wild, lasting for weeks on end. Apparently, God recently hosted a get together with both Axl Rose and Brian Wilson performing a backyard set that consisted of Monkees' songs. The Devil, on the other hand, tends to remain miffed at never having been invited, and spends hours floating in his glass-bottom swimming pool, as various boy bands, Creed, and Avril Lavigene via for his attention. I'm still holding out hope, however, that G & D will bury the hatchet and get back to doing what they do best--collaborating on that kick-ass ebb & flow and general havoc that set them apart from the masses.

Alan (God, et al...):
Tweaked about my discipline... Starting with Feuerbach, pre-Marx, though usually attributed to Durkheim, sociologists have a long history of exploring the ways religion and spirituality represent diverse modes of institutionally expressing social norms and values embedded in (changing, class-, race-, gender- and sexually-grounded) social relations. What becomes really interesting, and I've NEVER seen anything about this, is how this sense of the spiritual gets translated into popular (garage or underground) musical traditions. How can we understand the various forms of musical expression that seek to actually express something (however inchoate) flush with substantive meaning as representative of a similar search for spiritual, as opposed to directly religious, connection and depth. Is this where getting lost in pure volume or dwelling in the minimal provide different kinds of saturated space for seeking/connection? The problem James S has with so much Christian rock, then, may derive from its dearth of ambiguity, exploration, seeking as opposed to a derivative expression of any one static and institutonalized religious expression formulated by others in other settings. Can you believe that I've been told to lighten up on fiarly regular occasion???

thom, I agree to both of your comments. Especially you`re right that this cannot be the place to discuss such broad and sensible topics in a way it would satisfy. And of course, the christian doctrin transformed god images of ancient religious cults into their christian devil (for German readers I can recommend Rudolf Augstein`s well informed study "Jesus Menschensohn"). But anyway, I keep my opinion that most rock n rollers have a very shallow approach towards such topics (well, okay I don`t really get any serious input from that field - it`s like Bono` poltical approach, honest but most naive). Wearing crosses up or upsidedown doesn`t say much besides the need to offend. And, after reading some books about the black side of religion by and about A. Crowley and the likes the best I can say about them is they are quite amusing but, on the other hand, pretty much adolescent, egocentric - and - more often than not - heavily drug-induced. ##### Coming to a much more pleasant topic: Holly Golightly rules! I especially love her tongue-in-cheek love duet with Jack White on "Elephant" (It` true that we love one another").

By the way, The Kinks' "Time Will Tell" is truly a great song, and an unreleased one by them to this day, I believe, even though the studio version they recorded is completely polished and realized. Anyway, I'm curious to hear Holly G's version of said song, as it's nice to see the scenic routes explored.

Or perhaps a good metaphor for the early rock 'n' roll paradox would be Robert Mitchum's character in "Night of the Hunter," with Love tattooed on one hand and Hate on the other. I don't think Satan really started looming large in the game until Lennon uttered his fateful words in '65, and the Stones made good on the promise in the title of their third-rate Sgt. Pepper knock-off. Then came "Sympathy for the Devil" and the metaphor got a whole lot more complex and interesting. Onward to Altamont...

conch (God/Devil thingy):
Well, I've long thought there were the seeds of both the sacred and profane in early rock 'n' roll music, especially since so many of those early guys came from a Southern Baptist background--and more than a few kept alternating between the pull of rock music and the church, like Little "I did that first" Richard. Wasn't it Little Richard who converted Dylan to the Baptist doctrine for a while there? Anyway, I think the yin-yang of it was a difficult issue to reconcile at the time--might still be--and I suppose Tupelo Presley never quite could, although his gospel records are truly beautiful (Mrs. Franklin's as well). Gram Parsons, too, felt the sway. And, of course, there's always been a bit of the wayward preacher in a lot of rock 'n' roll performance, perhaps best articulated to the mainstream by Bruce Springsteen's usually tongue-in-cheek evocations of God & sex during his live performances--his "Reason To Believe" from Nebraska about nails it on the head.

tHom (shaky ground):
Frank C, this is opening a whole can of worms that perhaps cannot be served at this table, but I'd question the assertion that to "believe in the devil" requires a belief in God. Maybe so, if you are referring to the entity known as the Devil/Satan/Lucifer in Christian theology; the being whose existence as Anti-Christ is just as necessary to the foundation and practice of Christianity as Christ himself. But I think it is fair to say that there is a religious tradition, albeit pagan, which pre-dates the human concept of Yahweh and exists independent of the entire Judaeo-Christian belief structure - yet today is generally associated with "Satanism" in some form. And I still think it would have been cool if Millwall had won ...

Frank C (sympathy for the devil):
Well, Johnny Cash was deeply religious. A lot of country musicians are. Not to mention all those great soul musicians like Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes, and Solomon Burke. But I guess when it comes to rock n roll and religion the more interesting music is about refusing religion (NIN: "God is dead") or proclaiming the nihilistic or even satanic way of life (robert johnson, led zep, black sab, rolling stones, to name the most obvious ones). Though I don´t think most of the rockers really believe in this adolescent crap (except for Glenn Danzig). Because if you believe in the devil you have to believe in God, his creator, as well.

james s (holy musings):
Religion and art... now there's an interesting topic. they've mingled to produce some great stuff, and some really bad stuff, and some really interesting folk art stuff. When they've mixed in "literature", a lot of terrible sap has been produced, but some really good stuff too (Greene, Endo, O'Conner, Dubus, Dostoevsky... just to name a handful of christians). I can't come up with too much when looking for a good mix of religion and rock/pop. There's U2, Vigilantes of Love (Bill Mallonee can give you shivers when he's on), Julie Miller... hmmmm... John Coltrane... I didn't realize 16HP dude was for real religious; i've only heard that first record and I suppose I thought he was playing the nutty hillbilly preacher character in much the same way that Oldham was playing the drinkin' incestuous hillbilly. There's that whole "Christian" pop/rock genre that is all sooooo bad I can't help but think of it as merely a money-making scheme. Oh Well, enough musings on such.

Still, being a christian he still seems to have plenty of demons within to battle. A reluctant believer? Especially compared the quieter types like for instance Sufjan, Edwards seems not be SO much at peace....despite having found God and all. But what do I know? Reading the concert review by Lars I´d wish there was generally an early announcement of Howe´s gigs in advance - on the Tour section of this nice howepage where it belongs. Or, even better, via e-mail list. My nightmare is that Howe plays next door the other day and I miss it. And wouldn´t it be possible to put the REALLY important facts and news (tours, new releases, new artists on OWOM...) on the "What´s new" section? It´s quite hard to filter the hard facts from this message board if you´re not online 24-7. I remember that this topic has been raised before. But maybe now´s the time to repeat.

Disappeared for a long weekend so sorry to pick up a thread that's already old but the mention of Kuhn and the "paradigm" word reminded me of the brilliant novel, Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre - it contains a lovely running joke about that word, along with a million other bitter-sweet laughs. Hands down it's the funniest and most insightful satire I've read in ages. In fact, it's the best new novel I've read for some time, period. It says everything about the current methods and madness of the media, as well as the world they portray but, like the best satire, it manages to do it from a viewpoint of basic goodwill and optimism, rather than bitter hate and criticism. You may have read it already, but if not, I think most sandies will love this book. And yes, it would have been more than cool if Millwall had won ...

Hello there! 3 records you really could recommend? Here´s mine: the power out - electrelane (brittish girlgroup which makes stunning music. sometimes reminds you of early stereolab, sometimes the au pairs and then there is a track with a huge choir which knocks me off my socks everytime. nicely produced by mr albini) rejoicing in the hands - devendra banhart (truly unique singer/songwriter that avoids being boring by writing top songs, singing them in a really special and beautiful way) sonic nurse - sonic youth (just heard a promo version of their soon to come album and it´s their best since washing machine. more melodic songwriting, great riffs and sometimes beautiful...mrs gordon even sings some higher notes and it gives me goosebumps everytime)

This town (world) needs an anathema ie something we don't need or want so we can fight against it...it shakes us up. Don't worry, soon there will be a story put out there that should shake a lot of people up and make a lot of us wonder why some people have so much when some have so little and why that should be allowed to continue. Makes me wonder why all those similar stories that I've read so far haven't had the same effect. What will it take? Who needs reality TV when you have the wonderful Greetings from Tucson which I'm sure is a perfect example of how life is for people in that very city...! Note the sarcasm. In the meantime, I'm thinking of some choreography which would work with the new remix album of Calexico songs which is excellent. They should seek out a dance troupe to work on some kind of performance maybe. (Or my name's not Deirdre.)

Lars (hm, details? Okay then...):
For Jörg, Fred and anyone who is curious. New Ow Om band Mishi Mishi Mau played first. Non-word gibberish lyrics from brilliant vocalist Marie-Laurette Friis. And how wonderful she was a novice at the guitar. Wonderful "clumsyness". Just the right touch. Difficult to describe. Some kind of rock/funk thing with joyous vocal melodies and quite odd ideas along the way. I'm quite curious to hear the cd coming out. Very playful. Howe played with Thøger Lund on bass (electric and upright), Anders Pedersen on sliiide mandolin and lapsteel and John Parish on el drum kit. A gig that was pretty much all over the place. Songs blurred together in a maybe 20-minute distortion-inferno of Howestuff and covers. Various licks stolen, he-he, including Reeds other one, waiting for my man. Some of the "older" (of the new?) ones: Shiver, Blue Marble Girl and Always Horses Coming. Hm, and Felonius, Bored Lil Devil, Getting It Made, Paradise, Classico and another one were the chorus went "Welcome to paradise, paradise". And I guess about a little handful of songs I don't think I have heard before. Most of it quite noisy....like 90s Giant Sand from some of the old Sandman Series. It was the first time I've seen Howe in this "mode". He-he, rocking! :-D And god bless, can't remember a single decent and perfect guitarsolo from that night. How cool is that? Way cool! A beautiful mess. It was wohoo and yehaaa with plenty of reverb is cranked up distortion. 1-2-3-4-Boom! :-D Not sure how much Mr. Parish was prepared for the new material. Didn't seem to really get going. In the end, yes. But otherwise a cool gig. Plenty of people there, by the way. Small club. Probably 200 or so. And while recently I learned from the Jack Black-film "School of Rock" that I should "stick it to the man"....I stuck it to the soundboard. And my minidisc survived. I'll get back to you on that. ;-) (sounds quite neat, though) Hope I provided, compadres. Greets! / Lars

Of course the first "I-am-not-one-of-myself-ists" was Marx, eh? Recently I read that Thomas Kuhn -- he who is responsible for the superabundance of the silly word "paradigm" - is reported to have asserted not to be a Kuhnian (as did they guy who's followers consider themselves to be major philosophical opponents of Kuhn.) Now, on the one hand, this gives me great pause and not alot of hope... followers will be followers. On the other hand, the fact that Howe is quite clearly to be a Sand-inista ("just like us"?)... THAT gets me goin' and fills me with hope. May our little cell swell. HooRay for Our Team (and ice cream).

I just had to give my spin on the state of american television. Its bad. After 9/11 it had a conscience for about a week. Then it slipped into hell. Any night of the week you turn it on and there is at least one show carving up "ugly ducklings" to look like movie stars. The same"stars" that asked for millions of dollars per episode of their lame ass sitcoms. The executives figured it was much cheaper to get idiots to eat worms and fight over ugly bachelors with lots of money.(or so they thought) I think its all a ploy by Mr. Powell (Collin's son mr clearchannel) to keep Americans numb and very stupid and of course insecure so they could have their dirty little war.

Tideland and Howe? (I had no idea):
Typing in Howe Gelb and Mitch Cullin into Google with the bolean function offered some interesting links, and one says Mitch did the layout and logo for The Listener, and Bill Carter is making a film of another Mitch Cullin book. Another was a Gelb-Cullin-Gilliam connection at http://www.smart.co.uk/dreams/tidecull.htm. It's really weird how the thread here on watching Gilliam films has become circular and Howe maybe being involved in a Gilliam movie. How exciting. I'm wondering what else we don't know about. Lars, I think you can find a UK copy of Tideland at Amazon.co.uk.

"Brazil" is an absurd film. Wonderfully absurd. And a beauty to behold. And bloody hilarious (eh, literally). And it's kinda sci-fi too! :-D I didn't get it the first time I saw it as a kid, but in later years I've gotten me head around it....a bit more. Not sure what the title refers to besides the very present theme music throughout the film (yeah, it's the tune you probably know). Gilliam also made "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas" with Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro. Also one of my favourites. Gilliam flopped with "The Adventures of Baron Münchausen", but I discovered that the flick actually grew on me the second time around. Quite something, that film. Plus: it's mindblowing visually. Haven't you seen "Twelve Monkeys"? Also brilliant! Made me really respect Brad Pitt of all people! :-D "The Fisher King" is a bit more straight-ahead, but still a bit off-kilter for the mainstream. Oh yeah, and don't forget "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and "Time Bandits". He's currently filming "The Brothers Grimm" after failing at "Don Quixote" (has anyone here seen the documentary on this? "Lost In La Mancha". It's supposed to be good).
