Diana (alan) (in re: alphphabett): - R A G G M O P P... Raggmopp! Happy happy from MI. Howe, the last year did leave a great deal to be desired, though our son WAS born and I finally got to see Giant Sand (even if it was underattended in Detroit) after 14 years of ardent listening... May the new year bring less war, more peace and a great deal more lively creativity.

Which way are we turning now. Hm, I won't bother to think about it. As a matter of fact, I won't bother thinking at all 'till some time tomorrow....when I'll try to soothe an aching head. Well, happy new years to ya' all from this part of the globe. / Lars D

Paul (93456): - I gave my copy of Stromausfall to a friend to excerise his curiosity and he sent this reply: "It turns out that most of the oxidation on the disk that appeared to be
BELOW the surface, was actually ABOVE the surface of the plastic
coating. The contaminant was comprised mostly of adhesives and packaging
fragments (I should have guessed! The strange pattern matches that of a
popular CD packaging material called Tyvek.) and not aluminum oxide. My
guess is that a pile of disks was originally packaged in Tyvek sleeves and
sealed in a box, which eventually got soaking wet.
There are also bubbles and pits in the plastic near the outside. These do
not completely prevent the disk from being read, but there is no way to
clean them off. They will probably turn up as skips on tracks 8-9 on the
original, but only on some players. They may worsen over time if they
allow air to reach the aluminum plate. This is a manufacturing
defect. You might want to (cautiously) try a CD repair kit.
Now, I was able to clean MOST of the foreign material off with Windex,
although I would not DARE try anything stronger. (Alcohol, for example,
can eat through the plastic.)
- The original CD now plays perfectly on my "good" CD player, although
other players in the house will skip on the later tracks."

james s (transform garrulous writing into elegant prose): - Can anyone give me any tips on being Howe Gelb? (just kidding) If you like Howe's piano playing, you might want to listen to one of Howe's piano playing influences (am I right here?) as well: Thelonius Monk.

- Date: Fri Dec 27 06:02
Lars D (www.supertanker.tk): - Debate? What's that? I guess the only way now would be go out in the streets in such numbers, that CNN and NBC can't find any more excuses but to cover the story. But it's difficult when the owners of the two are the ones making the little war toys that are gonna be used on the iraqies. General Electric etc. (well, have a look here: www.cjr.org/owners). It's one of the things that makes me happy I'm not living in the US (but boohoo, the year-old business-friendly government in Denmark wants to privatize everything here too - including the media). But doesn't this comments board seem like too small and arena to discuss big subjects like that? Just asking... :-) Happy new years (inaminnit). / Lars

Thanks for the tele comments, they are a nice diversion but I'll stick w/012s&Bigsbys on Epi's and Gretsch's. Merry Xmas to all on this list - tomorrow George fights the battle of Bedford Falls.

- Date: Sun Dec 22 16:19
J (3 saddler): - Yes, 3 saddles have that very downside...
- Date: Sun Dec 22 09:10
Erik (Thoughts on intonizationt ): - Blaine, put new strings on(stretch/condition them) get yer tuner out, match the 12the fret harmonic to the 12th fret fingered note.Use your tuner to guide you back or forth with the saddle screw , so that the harmonic and the fretted note match exactly(or as close as you will get), this will get you closer but really Guitar techs use a strobe tuner for more exact intonization, also keep your pickup in the neck position and turn your tone nob down, always when tuning.Of course if your tele has those 3 barrell saddles (vintage tele style)this all will be hard to do.OK im getting long winded, Also get a copy of Tape op magazine #30 for Jack Endinos guitar tuning tips !
- Date: Sun Dec 22 05:57
james s (www.jamesscarbrough.com): - I finally found a copy of Swerve. Hey, that's a lovely take on "Every Grain of
Sand"! Wow. Also, anyone out there heard the first Dr John album, from
way back in '68, "Night Tripper; Gris Gris"?? Forget everything else you
may have heard from the Doctor and give this one a try. It is one voo doo
psychodelic spooky lovely trip. I'm signing off and hitting the roads for a
few days. So, if you'uns do Christmas or the like, have a good one.

sandfan ((still workin')): - James s -- Of course, I was younger and wiser back then. 'Twas glorious, tho, and I spent just over six weeks of a flowerpowered spring along the crookedest course I could find through the Smokies following the azalea bloom from valley bottom to ridge top.

Blaine (@work): - Gearhead question: Anyone have hints on setting the intonation on a Telecaster? The G and B strings don't wanna play well w/others. My own fault for swtiching from 012s to 010s.
- Date: Fri Dec 20 10:54
james s (wow): - Damn, sandfan, you're a regular John Muir, sir. From the Atlantic to the TN River... I would imagine that that was a pretty taxing walk, coming over those mountains.... and a beautiful walk as well! As jealous as I am of your having had that experience instead of me, but I can't muster up the aspiration to imitate you. I hope you post here more often, o' shy retired type.
- Date: Fri Dec 20 08:54

sandfan (@charter.net): - To James S. Not from East Tennesse, 'though it, like Tuxon and many other locales, holds a sweet spot in my heart. (Land 'tween the lakes in the west is cool, too.) After riding my thumb across the states throughout the '70s, I did walk from the Atlantic O to the Tennessee River (Gatlinburg to Cleveland in tn.) These days I toil for the good folk in the state senate in frozen Wisconsin. WDVX warms the heart and soul, though.
- Date: Fri Dec 20 07:44
james s (Sandfan... who be you??): - Is ya from East Tennessee? I am; maybe I know ye. Tony, the man behind WDVX, is a friend of mine, and yes, they run a fine camper (the radio station broadcasts from a camper).
- Date: Thu Dec 19 23:13

sandfan (sandfan@charter.net): - Haven't posted for a while -- shy, retiring type I guess -- but I think many of you would enjoy listening to a wonderful indie radio station in the hills of east tennessee while perusing the ether. Hardcore americana, bluegrass and more at wdvx.com. It's worth a listen (and maybe some support) dear friends. Be sure to check out Sat night's "The Fringe" and "All Over the Road" into sunday wee ones.

Spoink and Cranky (...): - Just an FYI for anyone ordering CDs.. We are out of stock of Hisser (even though it is still up on the OWOM store webpage) and probably will be a while before we have any new copies again.. Happy Holidays - Jim B.
- Date: Thu Dec 19 01:22
Lars D (to James): - Well, let's hope that Fricke's writings will help Under Byen.....in the same way he helped the other Danes in The Raveonettes (he wrote two reviews and suddenly ten American labels wanted to sign licensing agreements with them - Columbia Records won the bid). Pretty neat. But hey, what about the Ow Om Store, he-he?!?! Merry Big-X everyone! Now I'm going back to the ol' folks for the holidays. / Lars
- Date: Wed Dec 18 23:57
Lars D (to Em): - It'll be a very nice exchange indeed. :-) Yes, you'll get some of them as well. You can be sure of that. ;-) / Lars
- Date: Wed Dec 18 17:31
em... (it's cold): - cool James yes-feed me back :):):) In other news, I recently saw Talk to Her which I recommend highly. And it's cold. I am assuming, Lars that this band you and Rs speak of is on this prementioned compilation in exchange for mine cd?? Can't wait to hear it. Hi to everyone. It's cold.
- Date: Wed Dec 18 14:32
james s (A policeman pulls up and surveys the scene): - That band sounds interesting, Lars. Perhaps they will become more available now that RS has blurbed them. Anybody heard St. Thomas, "I'm Coming Home"?? I think Howe mentioned hanging out with him while visiting Nashville. I got a package yesterday, Em. Thanks! I'll get back with you later about that, via email, after I've had a chance to give it a couple of careful listenings.

Lars D (please allow me to go "YEESS!!!"): - It's not every day that Danish bands get compliments from people abroad. But now it seems Mr. Howe Gelb is not the only American who fell over backwards upon witnessing the favourite Danish band of yours truly live on stage (and on cd). DAVID FRICKE of Rolling Stone has finally written about them (I've been waiting all year). Allow me to do the good old cut-and-paste-technique: TEN OF THE BEST - FROM UNDER THE RADAR......... Picking the best records of this or any other year is a precarious, subjective art, made even more maddening by the fact that it is humanly impossible to listen thoroughly to each of the more than 30,000 new albums issued in this country every year, then to find all of the secret jewels buried in that mudslide. What follows is not my ranked list of greatness or obscurist cool for 2002: just ten great pleasures that didn't get away. ......AND THE SECTION ON UNDER BYEN GOES LIKE THIS: "Amid thousands of releases, ten pleasures that didn't get away "Their name is Danish for "Under the City." And here's the English translation of the album's title: It's Me Who Keeps the Trees Together. Thanks to the language barrier, that's nearly all I can tell you about my favorite new band and record of this year -- except that when I saw this remarkable eight-piece group from Arhus, Denmark at a music festival there in May, I was left speaking in tongues. With an eccentric armory of strings and keys (violin, cello, Wurlitzer organ, melodica), fronted by the haunted whoops and whispers of vocalist Henriette Sennenveldt, Under Byen make a beguiling dance music of pillowy beats and voluptuous shadows, with finely blurred echoes of British trip-hop, Björk's elfin romanticism and the ice-floe rock of Sigúr Ros. This will be a hard record to find: The group's Web site (underbyen.dk) is under reconstruction, and the Internet retail site below is mostly in Danish, with prices in Euros. But real treasure never comes easy.
BE SURE TO CHECK OUT WWW.SUPERTANKER.TK AND SEE WHAT ALL THE FUZZ IS ABOUT! Gee, I'm happy today, ha-ha. :-) / Lars

philllllllllllllllll (phi): - Anybody know anything about OP8 stuff with Juliana Hatfield? Will it ever be released?
- Date: Tue Dec 17 01:46
Lars D (taking a x-mas breather): - Yeah, apparently I was not the only one recording at one of the shows. But no, I'll wait. There were two new songs on Pedalless, right (Felonious and Torque). That's not the case here (as you can see). How's the 1997-recording by the way? (what makes it particularly good? Just curious). / Lars
- Date: Mon Dec 16 18:36
Todd (recommends): - the Thrill Jockey cd 'How Animals Move' by John Parish. Also Old Reliable's 'Pulse of Light/Dark Landscape' and Corb Lund. Possibly another TBOBR?...I just eared Sage Advice...grand news.
- Date: Mon Dec 16 15:33
stefan ((munich)): - Hey Lars, never mind - but there are a number of unreleased songs on Pedalless. And Pedalless was compiled and "released" with Howe's permission. So it apparently was just right. And I guess it would also be OK to circulate the Arhus recordings, at least the audience recordings. Two of them are in circulation anyway, as far as I know. ...................... My suggestion for a new Sandman release: Regensburg, Alte Mälzerei, April 24, 1997. Fantastic version of Solomon’s Ride. Parts of it remind me of Fred Frith's Massacre!
- Date: Mon Dec 16 15:29
Lars D (cameraman): - If it has any interest, I just uploaded a picture of Howe Live at Musikcaféen in Århus (25th September) as well as the poster I made for the event (helping out Scavenger Records). The adress again: www.angelfire.com/indie/lars-kd/privat-site/fotos.html I might have two more pictures from the show later (once I get them scanned) --- / Lars
- Date: Mon Dec 16 12:38
Lars D (to Blaine - and others): - Well, once Howe's released his new stuff we'll see. A "release" like that (sandman or not) should not include stuff that Howe wants to premiere on his own cd's. That wouldn't be right. So once there's no unpublished tracks left on the Danish recordings we could make some interesting stuff, I guess. There must be SOME of if that are "sketches" for The Listener? Man, I hope these next three months will not feel too long. :-) I'm quite excited. If you're curious about who Howe played with live and in the studio in Denmark, then check out Under Byen's website at WWW.UNDERBYEN.COM - it's just been totally rewamped and now includes mp3's. Once of my favourite bands. I can't praise them highly enough. It's very possible that you have never quite heard anything like them. You can read about the band in English on my Supertanker-site WWW.SUPERTANKER.TK - a friendly service for you foreigners. :-) Merry x-mas, folks! / Lars

Anybody else heard this Iron and Wine? Would certainly appeal to the M Ward fans, I would think. And Howe--did Richard Buckner drop by? And recordings made?

doug (mountaindougie@hotmail.com): - Anyone want to advise a fed up born/bred Chicagoan with little money (and by little, I mean none) on a move to Tucson around May '03? Looking for the properly cheap, endearingly dusty neighborhood and rental adobe/abode, not any gated fake grass community pool kinda deal I see on all the internet listings. A lonely evening watching Howe play my town's beloved church the Hideout recently got me to thinking it's time to move on to many lonely evenings in Tucson, which I visited twice and didn't want to leave either time. I hoped you folks would have better advice than citysearch.com and similiar internet dealies (although most of y'all seem to be in Denmark or something!) Lars D (welcome!): - He-he, well, if you're in the neighborhood (Denmark) please drop by. :-D But I haven't got a house. Just a room on the second floor. There's a mosque on the first floor and they're not that happy about people drinking in the garden. So I keep the brewskies in my room or go out for a night on the town. Ha-ha! Yeah, love this site too, sandmate! / Lars

Lars D (Doh!): - Ooops, how could I forget Tom Waits' "Alice"? The titletrack alone makes it a good buy. I was a tiny bit dissappointed with "Blood Money", but maybe that's because I saw the play, which was a little more "lively". / Lars

Lars D (taking a stab at the top-10): - Alright, this years favourites (some old-ish, some new) in no particular order: Giant Sand - Chore of Enchantment, Under Byen - Det Er Mig Der Holder Træerne (the magnificent 2nd album from the new Howe-friends from Denmark), Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain (still awesome!), David Bowie - Heathen, Radiohead - homemade burnt cd (with the excellent new songs in live versions), Howe - Hisser, Songs: Ohia - Ghost Tropic, Howe - Pedalless (good work there!), Pinetop Seven - Bringing Home The Last Great Strike, Howe - Live At Café Mozart & Musikcaféen, Aug.-Sept. 2002 (bootleg - please don't ask - wait a bit - later, later), Schneider TM - Zoomer. / Lars

Shaun H. (this time last year woulda been @ Hotel Congress...): - ...and West Ham had just beaten Manchester United 1-0. another year, a different location, different scoreline. ah well. top 10, well i'm sure there's other more 'interesting' stuff that come out, but here's my popuLIST: 1. The World Is Waiting For A Sunrise - Jon Rauhouse w/ Neko Case 2. Sleep With Me Instead - Louise Goffin 3. Do You Realize?? - the Flaming Lips 4. Johnny Hit & Run Pauline - Giant Sand w/ PJ 5. Over You - Roddy Frame 6. Come Fly With Me - Coloursound 7. The Whole World - Outkast 8. All That You Give - Cinematic Orchestra w/ Fontella Bass. 9. Runnin' Out Of Fools -Neko Case 10. It Takes More - Ms. Dynamite. hey there Mr. Kerr, yeah i got down to the Barbican for Los Lobos and of course Calexico and the Mariachis. doesn't feel like the place to go into too much detail, but if Giant Sand and Calexico are 2 sides of the same coin then that makes us very rich people.
question borne out of ignorance - was wandering around baby Gap the other day and heard a dance version of that piano piece that Howe breaks into on 'Pedalless' after "Yer Ropes". i realise i should know it, figured it as either some traditional American tune or an old tv theme show, but neither of the reasonably intelligent people i was w/ had an idea either. can someone tell me??

Lars D (why mysteries?): - Does really great music become less great if it has less "mystique"? Not if it's really good, in my opinion. Taking the "mystique" out of music now and then, I think is healthy. That reveals whether it's just hot air or long lasting "good stuff". And Howe's approach to everything is wonderfully down-to-earth and has the right degree of de-mystifying. :-) A refreshing thing in this music biz, where musicians ofte put themselves on an unreachable piedestal (long live the internet, he-he). It's no use acting weird just to become a mystery (right, Mr. Dylan etc.?) (sorry, I'm not a Dylan-fan). But yes, asking fans whether it's okay to make more records, then you know what the answer will be ("Yes, oh, yes!!!") ;-). It's interesting and funny, though, to reflect on the "form" of the releases. Howe, mystery or no mystery, still has his "howeness" and that's his own. :-) / Lars D

But tonight I've written and uploaded the setlists for the shows (with some comments) as well as "memorable quotes and situations from the shows".....I thought much of what Howe uttered this summer was so illuminating and/or funny that I felt like sharing it with you. Mitch (85718): - Well, heck, Lars...to each his own hurt, I say. On the other hand, I, too, very much like the NIN/Bowie version...saw them do it in Austin around '95 or 96', and it proved a great segue from the NIN set into Bowie's set. Same concert where I really started feeling my age, 'cuz once NIN left the stage, about one-third of the audience left the venue, while Bowie and Carlos Alomar were doing "Scary Monsters". Even the mosh pit became less moshy.

- Date: Sat Dec 14 02:23
Lars D (Cash....in?...out?): - I hears someone ramblin on about how great Cash's version of NIN's "Hurt" is. And that I've heard it I really can't see what's so great about it. It doesn't even have the "off-key" thing that made the original something else. Actually I really like NIN's and David Bowie live-duet version. That's pretty cool. Cash's "Personal Jesus" also leaves me a bit cold. Especially when Depeche Mode have already made a great acoustic version of it themselves, which sounds really good. Speaking of Cash......Howe used some Cash on the discman at his liveshows.....how come Johnny-boy is singning in German? (I find it rather hilarious) :-) / Lars

Paulk (Brautigan): - Haven't read him in years. First time was with a girl I was in love with in the 70's and she insisted on reading all of Watermelon Sugar to me. Some of his short stories were pretty audacious in their hippy eccentricity, must dig some out and read them again. You can hear him reading on Mad River's album "Paradise Bar and Grill", kazaa or one of these file sharers might have it. Sad to hear of the untimely death of Mary Hanson, guitarist and vocalist with Stereolab, a group I love mightily.
I like the comments site and visit it daily, seems as if I know some of the regulars on it but Frank has been talking about starting a regular posting group like Yahoo host. These groups can carry photos, album covers and the like. If you want to comment on this write to giantsand.dicuss.com (i think).
Howe, keep taking the tablets and leave a sample on the way out.

simon (?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?): - hey howe, when do you imagine your wonderful collection of down homes
will come blinking into the sunlight? i'm particularly looking forward to
another manifestation of 'spun'.. one of your most sublime songs. i love
the version on 'glum' with its warbling intro.. but the simple solo piano
version is quite stunning.. you just wish it would go on for ever. it's a song
like so many of yours that deserves to be heard in as many incarnations
as possible.. each one with its own merits. it makes your idea of
releasing alternate versions such an excellent one. 'seldom matters' is
another great example. (although my version on 'stromausfall' ends
abruptly.. is this my copy or do they all do that?) also, are you touring
europe next year, especially london, with plenty of new material and yet
more versions of older material?
on the subject of comments, i'm very much in the same boat as manny.. a
frequent visitor but an infrequent comment leaver.. but i do think the
home page could say something like 'add YOUR comment' instead of just
'comments'. it would help the more tentative types. would this give you a
design headache, mike? (sorry, a lot of questions and not so many
answers)

Lars D (...more...): - Oh, and what about a couple of "non-rare" mp3's on the site? You know, so new visitors can get a more precise taste of Howe's music. The first time I visited the site and downloaded the rare songs I wasn't really diggin' them that much. I was not until I experienced Howe live and bought "Chore...". My point is: I've discovered quite a few excellent bands just by checking out their sites and downloading a couple of their songs. Those include Pinetop Seven, Songs: Ohia (at Epitonic) and The Black Heart Procession. Oh yeah, and The Black Keys (which it seems I have to order from Amazon in the UK, to get hold of). / Lars

Lars D (on the site etc.): - I generally only check out the Comments page (several times a day sometimes). But now and then I have to find something in the discography section - and I must say that those are brilliant, Mike. Very useful. One thing, though: not much seem to happen in the news section. But I guess the news are on the Comments page anyway, so that's not so neccessary? :-) Oh, and what about an update of the tour-page? Are there any shows on it from 2002 yet. (can't remember) It's fun to see how Howe has been travelling around. :-) An idea: how about a section of links to folks who have collaborated with Howe? I guess I can find PJ Harveys site myself, but there must have been loads of "lesser known" artists who have been working with Howe over the years. Could be nice to see who they are (or their sites anyway). Hm, and it would be cool to have some new stuff on the mp3-page now and then. Eh, I always get technical trouble with the streaming stuff. :-) Well, just some feedback. I haven't used the Ow Om Store yet, but I plan to do so in the new year, when I hopefully get some money somehow (how?!?). Christmassy greets all around from freezing Denmark (no snow yet, but QUITE chilly). / Lars

stefan ((munich; check out wolfgang laib)): - Re Blue Marble Girl. I’m looking forward to the early mixes with and without vocals. Maybe it’s the definite version you’re still missing, Mike G.? Anyway, there is one live version from Tucson in 1998 (the only 1998 show I have) with a version of Blue Marble Girl that doesn’t even mention the Blue Marble Girl and should be called Red Cap Boy. .................. Re Murakami. I read Wind-up Bird Chronicles thanks to a non-contributor to the comments page who gave it to me as a present, and it’s fascinating and great. I like the „hollow man“. Is this some kind of reference to another work? And after reading Wind-up Bird, I found that I’ve read another Murakami novel years ago (the Wild Sheep Chase). Then I read Sputnik Sweetheart which presented me with a „literary deja vu“: I knew the entire Ferris wheel episode in advance as if I’ve read it before in another book. ........................ I love the chaotic ramblings on this comments page and would only change its structure if it receives so many hits and comments that it becomes completely cluttered and unintelligible. Up till now I can follow just fine. And I love your feedback, Howe.

+em++ (chronic scroller): - I'd agree with Manny in that probably most of the people that visit this site visit the comments section and there's probably a good amount of people who read it regularly(cos it's so damn entertaining)but comment not often or not at all. I know I was scrolling it for alittle over a year before I commented. But I will leave it up to the professionals. I do like the idea of having a generally small handfull of people here and having a string of comments in a row all pertaining to the same subject but, then again, whosever going to visit the comments section who's visiting the webpage probably already does and will as new fans are made.. The new Down Home is enticing me

Maybe I should be ashamed to admit this, but...although I've only left a handfull of comments throughout the years, I've logged on to this comments board every day except maybe 9 or 10 times since it's inception. howehowehowe ()santa has joined zz top...already has beard(): - many thanks for the feedback. i love feedback. it is the life blood of the clattering here. i have been listening to the original version of blue marble girl and the last version of it recorded during the "cover magazine" sessions...and i know i am a believer in the evolution of revolution, but man...it trips me out to even wonder what was clogging up the perception back then to not release it in its inception. and there are two mixes of it from back then; one with and without vocals....but the one without vocals is so fine. there were so many parts to it then. what happened ? why did i figure it would suffer from too many chord changes? the newer version is very strong and the probably the last time the band sounded so cohesive, but the earlier version is so satisfying. then there's the original version of "leather". this one will crack you up. did i ever release an instrumental called "vanishing point" ???....and then there is a rather entertaining elongated take of a tom waits cover (invitation to the blues) done around the op8 session ...before lisa showed up. a couple of band supported "hatch" takes...and the original version with john parish when it was called "local motion". there is also a great alternative take of goldfrapp's "human/lovely head" medley from the 'cover magazine' session that is even way better then the one released on that record. weird trail of decisioning. anyway...that stands to the be the bulk of DOWN HOME 2002. the live (infiltration of dreams) will be the 2001 ...and we will try to add some tracks ...but i think the cd was too full as it were on that one...i seem to remember having to take some tracks off to fit on a 74 minute cd. if it semms short, then that is always a good sign. and 2003 will be stuff from the next solo record that didn't make it on the official release coming out in march (the listener). it will include a few tracks of jammings when the giant sand and other calexico boys got together for an afternoon and played anything that was lying around...like on a new version of "spun" and such. the new piano record is done and should be called (OGGLE some piano....and features voiceless piano tracks, but with extra instrumtation like drums and such from the usual suspects. and the new BAND OF BLACKY... RANCHETTE has officially started applicating it self to cd. tomorrow senor ricardo bucknero will drop by ...as will tommy larkins...and we'll see if we manage a song. no promises. it might be good just to sit and sun. - ok. um...one last thing...should we make the 'comments' link on the home page more obvious to those visitors who may not understand what it is exactly when they check the site out?....this will mean a lot more folks coming in to land here....or do you all rather it remain more intimate . ---howehowehowe

However, regarding alternate mixes, etc. I'd like to hear more live stuff from the last four years. The stuff since Hisser onward has been fascinating and I'd love to hear live versions with the band from the last four years or so. I got Infiltration, but it seems short.
By the way, is 4 Door Maverick in Dropped Standard or a dropped D or something? I've been playing it with a capo on the 3rd fret but its not right. Same question about St. Conformity. Mitch (85718): - Thanks for explaining the mystery of the "Stromausfall" disc, Mike. I'd always wondered about that. About two years ago Joey Burns showed me his copy of the CD, which was also suffering from the same damage. Looked like mold to me, or like air had gotten into the disc itself--the kind of thing you hear happening in more tropical environments. A bit like Mission Impossible, where the tape self-destructs after a while--come to think of it, not a bad idea for making people relish collectibles while they can. Guess that alone makes the possibility of a "Stromausfall" re-issue all the more glorious.

Lars D (Århuzonian response): - Stromausfall. Uhhhh, acoustic ?! Me like very mucha! And about different takes of the same songs: A song like "Lie There", which you played in Denmark, I like very much both the full band version (like at Musikcaféen) and the acoustic version (like at Café Mozart). Is the differences like these you mean? The acoustic "Lie There" is one of my favourites even though the guitar was a bit out of tune. ;-) It's on that "Wednesday Workshops"-cd from Café Mozart, that you got before you left the first time. I would hate to miss the "stripped down" version. Or would that be Sandman Series-material? / Lars

I saw Mike Leigh's "All Or Nothing" at the cinema sunday. And it's one of the best films I have seen in a looong time (and I watch many films). Well, it's British "social realism" with all the negative mood that includes, but it's SO well acted. Blew me away. It hits you right in the heart machine. And no plastic Hollywood. Blaine (@work): - Ah, Mitch -- Punch Drunk Love is a great one (I heartily recc all of Larry Brown's books as well). Watched Mullholland Drive and when it got to the end, my girlfriend says "I think we should watch it again." -- still didn't make much diff. I don't recall any movie causing such heated discussions among friends -- which means ol Lynch certainly suceeded in one regard. Here's the bomb, I'd been trying to turn a good buddy on to the magic of Giant Sand for years, making him mix tapes etc. Last time GS played in CHI I bought him a ticket. "Well do you finally get it?" I asked him after the gig. He smiled and said it was the musical equvalent of Mullholland Drive. ...and in the weather, today's heatwave in MKE cracked the mid 40's. FYI -- Rolling Thunder initally took place in theatres in the NE and Canada. They later regrouped to play larger outdoor places. This second leg is where the TV show came from (and the Hard Rain alb.) The current cd is from the first leg.

Mitch (85718): - I, too, really enjoyed M. Drive. After my first viewing, I decided it was best not to ponder it beyond reason. Or as William Hurt said in The Big Chill, "Sometimes you have to let art flow over you," or something to that affect. I also enjoyed that delightful filling which came between the slices of Lost Highway and M. Drive: The Straight Story. Lars, has "Far From Heaven" made it to your shores yet? Or "Punch-Drunk Love," my favorite American film this year?

I took Mulholland drive very seriously, not one of my brighter ideas, in the dark, better half sleeping next to me...

humphry (home): - hi mike. yep, mulholland drive is a hoot. it almost looks as though lynch was really given the money to finally finish the film something like 2 years after presenting it to possible distributers, which at that time he was shopping as another tv series. but then the french got involved and tossed him the coin to complete it as a full length motion picture. but that lack of continuity adds to the punch. there are too few films that deal with the perception of our racked senses as we pass from this life into the next, but i think this one makes a mark. and almost every scene embraced by the lens is so drenched. lavid drench.----hop-a-long-howe

james s (I guess it's right to love the girls who fight off our manly acts of desperation): - Perhaps the most important shot, plot-wise, in Mullholland Drive is the first one, of lying down on a pillow. Ghost World is terrific, and on the DVD, you get the full Indian video which is the best thing I've ever seen. I'm thinking that early next year, Giant Sand and Lampchop should do a double bill at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville. I'm sure Vic would gladly come up to join the fun, and I've heard that Mark Linkous has moved somewhere into the Smokey Mountians, which is only about 3 and a half hours away... The last time I saw Lampchop headline at the Belcourt, they filled the room with a rapt and attentive audience. It's just a thought. I'm mean, what could be better than a "beyond Nashville" show right here in the belly of the beast.

Graham (in the corner on the pouring rain): - Skip James is the finest of the Delta Blues singers--great fingerstyle playing. Haunting falsetto voice. His 1930s recordings are the most intense, but his 1960s "rediscovery" albums--Skip James Today! and Devil Got My Woman--are excellent as well.

PaulK (Rollin thunder): - The venerable BBC music programme "The Old Gray Whistle Test" broadcast a Rolling Thunder show in the mid 70's. I remember spending an hour on my knees nest to the telly with a microphone held to the speaker recording this on an old portable (not walkman) tape recorder, praying my dad would not come in muttering his usual "in my day you could hear the words........." God knows where that tape is nowadays. My kids have bought me the dylan release but I'm not allowed to open it until the 25th. Kind of makes it exciting again. Shaun, hi there, did you get to any of the Barbican gigs? And Howe, tell Blacky it's been too long, he's like a long lost friend who has reappeared from some years in the wilderness. I'm just curious how a "non-Dane" sees the site (which is all about Danish music - written in English). Is the language, the lay-out and the design okay? Is it helpful in any way in its aim to service musicfans outside Denmark? While you are there you can read about Howe's new Danish friends in the band Under Byen (which is one of the bios on the site that I have finished). And then there's the "old" articles on Howe's Café Mozart gigs. Do you have any good ideas on improving our site? Well, it's not totally finished yet. But it would be terrible nice to get some feedback on it. Especially from people outside Denmark. Does it make you wanna check out Danish music at all? :-) Feel free to send me an e-mail. That would be very much appreciated. Thanks. / Lars

Lars D (to Mitch): - Here's an attempt to help you with the automobiles. In 1904 the "Father" of the modern Danish press and journalism Henrik Cavling (our Pulitzer-guy) released a travel book called "London". I've got it and I just flipped through. It's heavily illustrated, and all I can see are horse carriages (or what you call them?) in the city streets. But of course, I don't know if a few rich folks had any. But as far as I can se they were not common. The only two cars in the book are a racecar in the books "sports section", where it is described how people get the train out to the big parks on the weekends. The underground trains were up and running, though. Cavling was very attentive and usually noticed everything - and describing things very vividly.
The books says something about a car race in Paris-Bordeaux in 1895, which boosted the French motor industry. The same did not happen in England. People resisted the engine. But something called Automobile Club of Great Britain was founded promoting the use of cars. The first use of cars in the streets of London were purely practical - according to a "parliamentary act" called "Light Locomotive Act, November 1896". Larger freigh carriers drove through London at night. The book further reads that some doctors and rich ladies used cars. There's picture of an open car called "the family engine", where there are seats along the sides. A car-sized "bus"? Well, I guess that's all the help I can give you. Hope you can use it. Bonus trivia: Cavling wrote four big travel books: "America", "Asia", "London" and "Paris". In the last one he writes about "this new exciting place in the city calles Moulin Rouge". A funny read with the eyes of today. / Lars

Sean, yes I recall hearing ESCOVEDO tell the same story just prior to distorting into a Be Your Dog set-closer, but in the telling I heard, I don't think he mentioned the Giant Sand gig. "I Wanna Be Your Dog" was on the first Iggy record, in 1969? I'm lookin' forward to giving 'clusterrey hearts' a listen, Em. Mitch, what's up with the automobile/England query? Mitch (85718): - Lars, I'd recommend staring with Murakami's "Elephant Vanishes" collection of stories before diving into "After The Quake". I actually like "Quake" better for some reason, maybe because his writing/radar is a little closer to the ground. But the "Vanishes" collection is great fun and hard to put down. My two cents. Over to you, James. By the way, does anyone know what year the first automobile was introduced to England? Prior to 1903? Mike? Sarah? Henry Ford?

But before I move on to the third book maybe I should finish the JG Ballard one I got going (I'm a book jumper - short attention span, I guess). And I also have some Vonnegut and Philip K. Dick I wanna start warping my mind with. But hey, I might check out that japanese guy some of you keep mentioning in here. "After The Quake", right? Is that a good starter book on the guy? SeanT (james s): - James , the Giant Sand Alejandro story also involved Iggy Pop and James Williamson , a
bar , drugs and some bad sex .This was the intro before he played I Wanna Be Your Dog.
I can't remember the story but GS were the band playing in the bar as Iggy and James
were getting high , just before some bad sex , something like that !
Then those chords....

PaulK (Alejandro): - Sean, probably the same story he did in Glasgow. Iggy meets Bela Bartok at a Giant Sand gig 9can't remember where). He takes him back to a trailer he has prepared for the tryst. He has feng shuid it (?spelling), set up aromatherapy smells, got some nice lovin' music on the stereo and they go at it, in a safe sex manner and then in a very unsafe sex manner. The issue of this union is "I Wanna Be Your Dog" As he told this story the band were noising it up and at the conclusion they sprang into a brilliant rendition of said song. Did I miss anything out?
Hi and hello Howe, when you coming back to Scotland?

Adam (Thanks): - ~~Thanks alot Howe, Tom, and Mitch. I feels good to get some kind words from some good people. I'm sure whatever this is will pass(usually does), and then maybe I'll do like Em, ship out what I've gotten out. Speaking of which; Em: I surely wouldn't mind hearing what you've been conjuring up. Take Care and enjoy the weather. Adam.

Adam (Lars): - Yeah, I kinda figured out the intended way after I got my "quickie" impulse outta the way, it seems like the first three editions are the real credible ones (I think I clicked through the fourth ed.) later read somethin that Eno himself wrote, made it a lil clearer. Afterall, it boils down to action, right. Thanks again.

And as you said, it's free. lovey, johnny

I finally got my hands on 'The Farm' by Rainer. Very, very beautiful and touching. All of you who haven't got that piece of magical music yet, I recommend that you get it as soon as you possibly can.. By the way, it's minus 5 degrees Celcius in Belgium, for all you weather report freaks out there :)

Lars D (One last Eno....maybe): - Well, Adam, if the quick way works for you that's just cool. But actually I think the "procedure" is to take one card at the time and do what it tells you to or use it in your work somehow. The cards are made for situations where you are stuck, but I guess they can be used as general inspiration as well. Eno mostly uses the cards in the studio. And I guess, if it wasn't for Eno and his cards U2 would never have made "Achtung Baby" and just gotten stuck instead (well, I think they are NOW, but hey...). I especially like the card "Honour thy error as a hidden intention." :-) On David Bowie's "Outside" he used another method: roleplaying. And I think that has resulted in an album that you can find new things on forever. So many layers. Well, let me just recommend Eno's book "A Year With Swollen Appendices". That's his diary of 1995 and it contains a lot of articles as well (including one with the roleplays from "Outside"). In 1995 he produced "Outside", U2's "Passengers" and his own album "Spinner" with Jah Wobble. Funny and mindbending reading throughout. You can also find many hours of interesting reading (for musicians and the like) at EnoWeb: http://music.hyperreal.org/artists/brian_eno/ --- The article "The studio is a musical instrument" (1975) is quite interesting. / Lars

I wouldn't call it writer's block, only because I don't like that word, but it's somethin, and it ain't good. philllll (phillly): - I was saying I thought TEMPTATION OF EGG on CHORE OF ENCHANTMENT(not the version on HISSER)sounds like Prince. I think it's the organ. There's kind of a funky thing going on. Then there's the guitar break near the end. It reminds me of that song CREAM in particular. The lyrics are kind of Princeish too. Listen to it again.
- Date: Wed Dec 4 11:29
dave (frozen tundra): - Yeah Howe, you're right. It was a drawing of Neil with his harmonica holder. I think the piece was even written by the almost famous Cameron Crowe. I ran out and bought the triple album "Decade" shortly thereafter. The photos of the Ramones were kind of scary at the time! I think I still have that issue and a few other in a box with some old National Lampoons when PJ O'Rourke was writing for them. I think my wife threatens to throw that box out every time we move, but it finds its way to the attic anyway. Rolling Stone went down the tubes in the 80's. Reading MOJO now kind of reminds me of the old Rolling Stone and what it tried to be.

- Date: Tue Dec 3 16:09
dave (frozen tundra): - HOWE. Just wanted to wish you a great holiday season and thanks for all the great music. I've been pulled into your music catalog like gravity! I've been listening to music for many moons. My older sister's boyfriend bought me a
subscription to Rolling Stone in '79 when I was in high school and the first issue I got had Neil Young on the cover and I guess the rest is history. Living in the Midwest, I was very unfamiliar w. Giant Sand until a few mentions in No Depression. When PJ Harvey listed Chore as her favourite record of '00, I finally found a copy and bought it. Since then, it's been Chore, Selections 1990-2000, Confluence, Cover Magazine, Lull, Hisser, Unsungglum, Pedalless.
That's a lot of really good stuff in a five year span! Keep it up. As far as the Thrill Jockey record goes, use the best concise stuff to reach a larger
audience. I agree the version of "Wonder" on Selections 1990-2000 is better than the version on Ramp (Oh yeah, I bought Ramp too). Plenty of people will still seek out elongated versions, etc on Down Home. Just use the best songs and performances. Regards.
Oh and by the way, a holiday tradition I highly recommend is to listen to nothing but the Grateful Dead between Christmas and New Years, in honor of their stands in SF for New Years. It really gets you in the spirit, what with all the noodling and jamming and Jerry's elegant playing. It just feels right.
I recommend the Dicks Picks series from the early 70's. Ok, I don't post with
any frequency, so I've said way too much and no one is going to want to friggin read all this! HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

In any case, I did finish Murakami's latest collection and--well, of course--loved it. Have you got to it yet? It's perhaps more sedate than his earlier work, and uses the 1995 Kobe earthquake as a metaphor for the upheavels (big and small) in people's lives. Strangely enough, I started reading it in Kobe when I was there in September. Okay, gotta hobble.

james s (www.jamesscarbrough.com): - thanks for the trigger finger comments, erik. glad you paid a visit. lars, i dig that ms. eno. i think that first one of his (solo, sort of) albums, "here come the warm jets" is still one of the best platters of sound ever assembled. of course not everthing he did was that good, but he took chances. consistency, that is, being consistantly interesting and/or good is a swell thing, but consistency as an end in itself is a bore and overrated anyway. can you imagine what the planet would be missing if rock & roll sun gods like lou reed, neil young, and howe gelb (i'm putting you in good company here howe, but you deserve it, pal) spent their days worrying about being consistent? and eno gave not only warm jets and some wacky fun on roxy's first couple of slabs, but also gave his name brand helping hand to, not only u2, but also talking heads and, yes, even devo (are we not men?) if i were given a wish on my deathbed, i'd wish that some huge speakers could be placed in orbit around the earth and that first bit of sonic madness on slouch and purge would be played and played, repeated into infinite time, loudly for the whole world. then, no matter what heaven or hell or nirvana is reserved for my eternal soul or noneternal non-atman, whatever is left of "me" will be smiling. ok, enough nonsense for the moment. happy holiday to you if tomorrow is a holiday for ya, and happy tomorrow if it's not...

Some cds seem to have songs grouped together to simulate this (prob deep in somebody's unconsious). I'll admit I rarely ever listen to a full cd all the way through, most bands do not have that much good material for one long shot. Then again stuff like Charles Mingus and John Coltrane seem almost short when heard via cd. Either way it's a debate that straddles generational mindsets. One of the ol' Suzukis said The beginner's mind is full of possibilities, while the expert's mind has few. Or somnething like that.

mike ([sa-wa-ro]): - ...i think the longest album i have come across (no pun) is 'freedom' - by neil young, which is just over 61 minutes long...... there has to be something longer though...'inagaddadavida' feels like it, and that's just one track

Lars D (whoops, me again - a quiet night - nothing else to do): - I found this on www.indiecentre.com (under 'Manufacturing'): "Maximum Lengths for Vinyl = 12" 33 1/3 RPM - recommended 25 minutes per side (above these limits, you begin to sacrifice bottom end and levels)." That equals 50 minutes in my book. You don't have to drive through that many traffic lights, if you only need to cut two minutes, Howe, ha-ha. The citizens of downtown Tucson can relax now. But is anyone here an expert on LP running time? / Lars

Lars D (www.angelfire.com/indie/lars-kd): - Oh, just came across another quote from Eno. You want it? No? Too bad, here it is: "If you've been doing a certain type of work for a while, you're familiar with it, you're quite accomplished at it, it's no longer clumsy. But when you start something new it is very clumsy, and it has all sorts of failures built into it; it's ugly, actually, at the beginning. But I've learned to believe, to trust that that's where interesting things come from -- from something that is somewhat cumbersome and unshapely, but strong." That was from 1990. It just struck me that I see some of the same in the spontaneous approach of yours, Howe. (This is meant in the most positive way possible - just so there's no misunderstandings - English is not my mother tongue after all). :-) / Lars

Lars D (- - to James): - Your comment reminded me of a quote from music's egghead Brian Eno, who wrote in his (published) diary of 1995: "I realize the reason I like playing records (as opposed to CDs) is that they're short: they stop after 20 minutes. I want less music." But then again that may be a dangerous things to say around one of ones favourite artists who's about to put out six albums. :-D Drive safely, Howe! (or are you gonna ride the railroad track - ice tea in hand - once more?) ;-) / Lars D
