james s (kciwegdes eide):
Yes, that Edie Sedgewick by George Plimpton is the same book as the one I mentioned, "Edie by Jean Stein". It's actually by a multitude of folks, I suppose, lots of things edited together by people associated with Edie and Warhol. Fun reading. It's worth buying (or checking out of the library) just for the stuff Truman Capote has to say about Andy Warhol. Funny stuff. Hope everyone has a fun time this evening, and HAPPY NEW YEARS (eve) to all.

BORSTAL BOY by Brendan Behan is a fantastic tale of growing up. Also, for all you Murakami heads, his main translator, Jay Rubin, has a book out about him early next year - Murakami, The Music of Words. Great title, I think you'll all agree!

Em -- if you are still on the hunt here's a few biographies that come to mind: Really the Blues by Mezz Mezzrow; Edie Sedgewick by George Plimpton; Beneath the Underdog by Charles Mingus; If they Move, Kill 'em (Sam Peckinpah - not sure of the author)

Date: Mon Dec 31 06:08

oh, and 'how bluegrass music destroyed my life' by john fahey will crack you up! everyone here, if you haven't already -- try to get a hold of that one!

Date: Sun Dec 30 18:50
erwin (_-):
em.. say the bookstores were all closed today and you would want to wander off again tomorrow. 'my last sigh' by luis buñuel. a book i 'lent out' once -- never seen it again.. an absolute must for a book written by a filmmaker. honest passionate revealing surreal..

Date: Sun Dec 30 17:17
e (m*):
wow! ask and ye shal recieve..thanks y'all! better wrangle up some more money once again..Hey, james-I read positively fourth street sort of by accident& it was sort of interesting--made me feel mighty sorry for joan baez. also, did you know mimi died a short time ago? well I'm off to buy a book or two:)

Date: Sun Dec 30 17:02
james s (Re: bio):
I enjoyed the biography Karen Armstrong did on Buddha for the Penguin Lives series. There's a bunch of interesting looking stuff in that series of biographies. I just bought the one on Dante, but haven't read it yet. My wife is reading Edie by Jean Stein and is enjoying it. I'm reading Positively 4th Street by David Hajdu which is sort of a biography , I guess, ( about Joan and mimi Baez, Dylan, and Richard Farina in the early sixties) and it's kind of fun.

Date: Sun Dec 30 15:41
Mitch (last one really, I promise):
Don't think it's in-print any longer, but if you can find William S. Barring-Gould's fictional biography of Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes of Baker St. it's called), I'd say snatch it up. It's written like a straight forward and well-researched biography, as if ol' Holmes had been born and lived to be 103 on his bee farm in Sussex (no clue is given that this person didn't actually exist). Very clever and deceptive, and apparently hard to find.

Date: Sun Dec 30 15:36
Mitch (once again, sorry):
One last one...which isn't a human biography as such, but a biography none the less and quite interesting: Alfred K. Mann's Shadow Of A Star (the neutrino story of supernova 1987a).

Date: Sun Dec 30 15:34
Mitch (again):
Just remembered...one of the best biographies I've ever read was Ray Monk's Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius. Also, Robert Kennedy & His Times by Arthur M. Schlesinger. Seems I'm falling way short of putting any women in here, so perhaps someone else can cover the other half of the sky a little better. Oh, yeah, In Exile From The Land Of Snows by John F. Avedon, which is the definitive account of the Dalai Lama and Tibet since the Chinese conquest.

Date: Sun Dec 30 15:23
Mitch (My Life As A Log):
Hey, em...tryin' to think of auto/biographies for you. I really liked Peter O'Toole's autobiography, just can't remember it's name. And John Nathan's biography on Mishima (called just Mishima) is fascinating. The Last Tsar: The Life & Death of Nicholas II by Edvard Radzinsky is good.

Date: Sun Dec 30 14:59
lindsey in tucson (lbar9109@aol.com):
hey howe....great night of music here last night ....wanted to thank you for making my friend from modesto who came up to you to profess much love feel so at home...and i think that team of you, naim, walbank, doug smith , and convertino was the winner of the night. thanks again

Great show last night at Solar Culture, hard to explain, kinda got going and then stopped and the rumbled some and then slowed--like jump-starting a car that finally roared to full glory. Toward the end of the show, Howe gave Joey his Xmas gift: a magic motion/lava lamp, which then was removed from its packaging and glowed onstage a bit during the concluding "Satellite". Was so good hearing "Sage Advice", and fabulous covers throughout: "The Beat Goes On" indeed. Trains came and went. Pennies got flattened.

What happened to Howe last night? I thought he was gonna play?

di (lucky you, tracey):
you're so right being this happy - enjoy the 'valley of rain/ballad of a thin line man' cd, they are two faaaantastic albums ! the only sad part is that "barrio" one of the greatest giant sand songs, from the 'valley of rain', is not included in this cd...but you can also find it on the first 'giant songs' collection - so, this year is leaving us and the best albums for 2001 aaare: howe-'confluence', nick cave + the bad seeds-'no more shall we part', bob dylan-'love and theft'.....with songs like "3 sisters", "vex(paris)","pedal steel and she'll", "cold" and "available space", 'confluence' turned out to be an amAzing album - that's the great thing about howe's music - from the 1985's 'valley of rain' to the 2001's 'confluence' it never ever ceases to surprise us again and again giving us melodies that will keep us company through the days and the nights, the best and the worse, through our hopes and our dreams - hope it won't be long till the new solo album gets realised that'll be the best gift for the new year to come - mmm m...yeah..can you think of anything better ???? ....I WANNA COME to the giant sand SHOW tonight !!!!!!....but az is sooooo far away...pif!

Date: Sat Dec 29 12:15
Rob Stanier (Robtstanier@aol.com):
James S. The film you caught a little of was Matewan. Great movie. Seems Will was a bit of a child actor at one point. He also crops up in Harmoy Korines Julien Donkey Boy but has spoke of his distaste for the uninteresting roles he was offered early on. Have you seen Requiem For A Dream? No Oldham but great film.

today on my way back from the market i was drawn to the used cd store. what the heck i'll take a look (like i always do) for some sand action. not expecting to find anything (like i always do) i was humbly surprised to find not only Swerve but also a combo of a Valley of Rain/Ballad of a Thin Line Man! yeehaw. i just had to tell someone! happy holidays to all.

peter s. (to archivist: sandman series):
... jim, the giant sand show i'd really love to see (or hear) again is the one the band played back in nov. 1989 (guess it was): howe, john and mark walton; arena, vienna, austria: a four hour lasting no-shit-forget-all-you-have-heared-before-rock-until-you-drop-kick-ass-convert-your-grandmother-rock-and-roll-set. a show that urges the audience to go outside; buy a guitar, a bass and a drumkit and praise the word: R O C K!

james s (boo hoo):
have fun all you'uns that are getting to be at Solar Culture this weekend. I'll be housesitting for a friend who has a tv and vcr, catching up on some flick action. Got to see a little bit of a movie on television over there yesterday afternoon about striking west virginia coal miners, starring no other than a young Will Oldham. ha. Listening to Oh Yeah (mingus) as I write. Lovely. Bye.

Greg -- my black and white Border Collie mutt came from the pound as well. Her name was Sonic (orig in homage to the MC5, but also an apt description of her, as it turned out.) While not a master food thief she could catch veggies before they hit the ground like she had radar. Get her chasing a frisbee and you will tire before he does. Everything they say about dogs are true when it comes to these kind. Nice work.

Date: Thu Dec 27 11:01
Mitch (er...oops...):
Oh, sorry, just saw that you already mentioned what kind of dog. My fault, haven't had my coffee yet.

Date: Thu Dec 27 10:59
james s (Re: Greg):
if you ever have to put one of those lampshade thingies on his neck to keep him from chewing himself up (you've seen those, right?), you could call him Lester.

Date: Thu Dec 27 10:58
Mitch (year of the dog):
Greg, what about "Lester" if he sleeps a lot, or "Faithful" if he comes right to you when you call, or "Catapult" if he zooms after sticks, perhaps "Not Good" for stealing food, or "Francoise" if it somehow fits. Come to think of it, if he chews up a lot around your house you could call him "Hard On Things." What kind of dog did ya get? Did Em end up naming the cat?

I don't know if Black Saint is the one or not (shrink writing liner notes), haven't really had the chance to look and listen yet with all of this holiday craziness. I look forward to a peaceful moment to dig into it. I don't know if Howe has cancelled or not for friday at SC. Anyone??

Date: Thu Dec 27 10:17
Greg Haldane (gmhaldane@hotmail.com):
Can anyone think of a good Sand-related name for my new Christmas pound pooch? He's a little black and white border collie mutt. He's a terrible mooch and a master food thief.

well, Gatekeeper, if you were to go back and correct misspellings, it would save me from having to correct myself with a second post everytime I try to say something on this board. (just kidding)

Date: Thu Dec 27 10:15
Greg Haldane (gmhaldane@hotmail.com):
James S, Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is one of my favorite Mingus albums too. Is that the album where his shrink writes the liner notes for him? I've been listening to Ah-Um a lot lately. Me and my little doggie dig it. Anyone know if the Mingus Mts in Arizona are named after Charles? FYI, Mingus was born in Nogales, AZ.

You've shown patience by waiting until now to use this tool, which suggests you are not quick to censor and won't abuse it. So, as far as I'm concerned, bravo. Of course, some of the continuity is lost and any visitors just reading through the comments might wonder what made frak so made. ha.

My friends Juli/Jay and I were counting on seeing him that night as they are returning home on Saturday after the holidays. Say it ain't so Howe! Sorry, no idea what "Scenic" is, besides certain state-sanctioned highways and biways. All right, in response to an earlier put forth question here--I finally picked through this year's faves and came up with a semi-list (non-Sand/Howe, right?). In no order: The Shins "Oh, Inverted World"; Gillian Welch "Time (The Revelator)"; Ryan Adams "Gold"; Jim White "No Such Place"; Cannibal Ox "The Cold Vein"; Aterciopelados "Gozo Poderoso"; Leonard Cohen "Ten New Songs"; New Order "Get Ready"; Mark Eitzel "The Invisible Man"; Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros "Global A Go-Go"; Gorillaz "Gorillaz"; Bob Dylan "Love & Theft". Of course, really, how can I leave "Confluence" by just Howe out? All right, okay, was hard to pick stuff this year--not sure if 2000 was better, or maybe I've been too busy, but my 2001 batch was harder to sort through. Will say that I think it was a strong year for the old guard, with Dylan, Jagger, & McCartney all putting out decent work.

I hope everyone is having a good holiday season. Hey, Santa must be paying attention to the recommendations for music listed on this message board. He (well, she) brought me Black Saint and Sinner Lady (Mingus) yesterday. As for nonSand in 2001, I didn't hit on too much this year apart from Giant Sand. Musically, Sand has been my monomania in 2001. I've listened to other things I'd not paid much attention to before (silver jews, pavement, friends of d.m., stereolab, sparklehorse, palace, granddaddy, etc...) and liked much of it, but nothing hit me with the impact that Chore did. Backyard BbQ and Hisser too. The Matt Ward record was a good thing. Well, cheers.

Mitch (uh...let's see...):
Well, Phil, correct me if I'm wrong (and I probably am), but isn't the Westin in the Foothills area (way north of downtown)? In any case, just know that Solar Culture is in downtown Tucson. If you can find Stone, and you're north of downtown, take Stone past University, past 6th, then you'll dip under the railroad tracks, and to your immediate left will be--uh, hm--Toole, I think (you'll wanna turn left there, and Solar Culture is right there to your right(it's kinda hidden, but look for various art pieces, sculpture, mural or something). The backside of the building, which contains other studios, art spaces, etc., is adjacent to the railroad tracks. So perhaps just park and ask someone who looks like they know where they are (believe it or not, can be difficult sometimes downtown). Also, there's a dance club called The Metro, which is on the corner of Stone/Toole--so you can use that as a signpost: Solar Culture is across the street from it, a wee bit northeast I suppose, but you'll be close, very very close at that point. Hope that helps, or makes any sense. Worst case, call Steve Eye or someone else there and just ask directions.

Thought it looked interesting and noticed Grandaddy appeared on a track who I was heavily into at the time. Very nice album, Explore you seems to be a perfect version captured without realising it.Shy of Bumf**k, excellent title. Started me on the long road to Sandom. Have not looked back since. I envy your hope and enthusiasm, Di. It alarms me that 140,000 people could carry out a peaceful demonstration and I can't find a mention of it in the popular media. The big networks know who butters their bread. People complain about a media on the left, the "liberal media". What a joke. A corporate-sponsored news media won't go anywhere near the left. I'd be happy if it could just get in the middle, and the real middle, like somewhere between Pat Buchanan and Noam Chomsky. The middle these days is somewhere between Pat and Al Gore. Sorry, this isn't the place, but......

"SELL SOME ROCKETS TO BUILD SOME SCHOOLS !!" and the streets got full of so many colours you wouldn't believe it! such such inspiration cause this earth needs PEACE FOOD + EDUCATION and you know what ? they are G8-we are 6000000000 and that's why we will win!- we didn't violate the red zone it was a peaceful anti-war demonstration so no coalitions happened-thanks for your concern!

sounds sweet, these parties of tomorrow so far away from me. Again, I must say, Hisser is a pleasure. Yes, I know most of you knew this long ago. "Explore You" is heaven. Just the sound of the record, the production (this ain't your standard "lo fi", many perfect sounds happening at perfect times) , the humor and the sadness, the song order, just wonderful. I wish there were more records like this in the world, with all of these right ingredients, and put together so well.

There's also an All Tomorrow's Parties at the UCLA campus, curated by Sonic Youth, with the Boredoms, Big Star, Television, Destroy All Monsters, Wilco, and a bunch more. Don't know about any chalets or anything as I won't be within a couple thousand miles of either one, but it might be a little more doable for those of you closer to sonoraland.

James All tomorrows parties happens once a year in April in the South of england at a place called Camber Sands by the seaside. Each year a different curator hand picks the bands. Last year it was Tortoise. they palyed a blinder as did Television, Calexico, Lambchop, Boards of Canada, US Maple and many more. The cost is £105.00 and for this you get a chalet for the 3 nights so no kipping in a wet field. Last year was amazing and this year the curators are Shellac. Bands confirmed so far are Smog, Bonnie Prince Billy, The Fall, Breeders, Plush, Wire and yes, Tom Verlaine and lashings more. Theres loads more info on the website www.alltomorrowsparties.co.uk and it also gives a full listing of the bands playing. I would highly recommend it. Best weekend I had last year and probably will be next year. All the best.Rob.UK Ps Howe get yourself on the bill and it truly will be a heavenly weekend.

Many of you are familiar with search engine Google. Some may not know it has a very interesting translation engine. If through a Google search you locate a Web site that is in a non-English language, you can push a button and Google will translate it for you. "GIANT SAND Chore of Enchantment (Thrill Jokey, 2000) Exited E' this spring this disc of largest the Giant Sand nevertheless it we have guilty ignored in order too much time. There were other discs, other innovationes that seemed to come before. They seemed exactly, why this year difficultly you will find a job of such depth. Therefore we find ourselves to listen to those polverose songs that the old Howe Gelb, from always the mind and the heart of the Giant Sand, has played with to John Convertino and Joe Burns, that is the Calexico. A trio helped from many other friends, between which Juliana Heatfiled and the glorious Jim Dickinson. Cos' has of special these songs? Perhaps the pain that they hide between the own folds, being these pieces dedicates to you to Rainer Ptacek, reliable friend of Howe Gelb nonchè member of the Giant Sand, scomparso three years ago. Danced that they move with a slow fascination, "Astonished (in Memphis)"," Punishing Sun "and" Shiver ", small essenzialità jewels, "Dirty from the Rain" and the melancholic "Raw", some sfuriata chitarristica neighbor to the Neil Young electrical worker, "Satellite", and some sghembo soul, "Temptation of Egg". And then that sour and only voice that literally tells own history, a po' like ago Lou Reed. To times enough one voice therefore and one manciata of splendid songs in order to make a great disc, true? " Get that? "Danced that they move with a slow fascination" is pure poetry!

you're right, molten granite is not called molten granite. generally granite does not even melt. usually it metamorphizes (which takes high temp and pressure, but not melting) into gneiss then the gneiss can melt and become magma which can cool back into granite.

Indeed, Harry Crews is another good one --Feast of Snakes, The Gospel Singer(?). That early stuff seems more trad Southern Gothic (if I can get away with saying that -- I think you know the ballpark) and his later novels do have what John refers to... that "I shouldn't laugh at this" non-PC humor. Quite dark and funny, but also very real. He lost me a few years back after the bodybuilder one, I'll need to catch up. Has anyone mentioned Confederacy of Dunces yet? Hilarious & human. There is a bio on the (late) author out or due out soon. Also, to anyone who likes the O'Connor stories, the book of her correspondence is very good and entertaining -- not dry in the least. Sometimes it's a disappointment to confuse the artist and the art (Chuck Berry), but FO'C seems genuine all the way round. No doubt in a a paralell universe Giant Sand took her out on tour. Lastly, I finally saw a movie called Vanishing Point last night. Nice early '70s existential American-dream-gone-haywire story. One other last comment -- the Faulkner character in Barton Fink was a cool reference. (my turn to apologize for rambling.)

I've always liked "The Violent Bear it Away" the best, although it's been a very long time since I've read it. Been slowly working my way though the collected stories. They're in chronlogical order, including some unpublished, and I'm having a hard time getting to the "good stuff," but I think it was "The Life You Save May be Your Own" was the last one I read and it really gave me a good jolt. I'd recommend Crews too if you've got a taste for offensive humor, maybe like "Fargo" you'll laugh but think that you shouldn't. Would you laugh at an amputaion? You might. But as always I am reminded of Killdozer's great "Lupus" (please imagine fuzzed out guitar and tuba here) - "Lupus took the life of Flannery O'Connor / She wrote may great things before death came upon 'er (bum bumpumbum bumpadum . . ."

tHanx Blaine, james s and Mitch for the opinions on O'Connor - your pooled enthusiasm has inspired me to try again. I'll take the general advice and begin with the stories ... and check out the Crews fellow too. A strand that may stretch the genre but I think still qualifies as an alloyed stratum in the Southern Gothic vein is Alan Moore's brilliant Swamp Thing series - the greatest work ever done in comics? Maybe. Probably. I've never read any of the Chinese or Japanese writers mentioned but I'm going to check out one or two as soon as I've read the early Pelecanos that's just come out in the UK (and worked my way through the rest of the pile on my armchair).

Mitch (everything that rises):
Personally, I've always loved Wise Blood (never seen the movie though, any good?), but I think O'Connor's real strength is in the stories. I suppose, in a way, the work might seem dated, and I've sometimes wondered if being from the south or southwest might make them resonate somewhat stronger for a reader from those regions. I think in a grand sense the modern analog for O'Connor might be someone like Ha Jin, whose writing comes from a very specific and unique place that few of us will ever experience (his place in China, I mean, not our own unique places). So if I may, I'd like to recommend a book that came out a year or two ago called Poachers--I'd have to race to the book shelf to double-check--but I believe the author is named Tom Franklin--good stuff, and a nice indicator of where modern "southern" fiction finds itself (have you read this one James?). Also, I know James S will echo my enthusiasm for the very late Breece D.J. Pancake's slim slim volume of slightly Carver-like stories--been a while since I've re-visited it, but I remember feeling at the time that he might've, possibly, been the modern incarnation of O'Connor--had he not shot himself at such a young age. Musically too, we have our O'Connors--Springsteen's Nebraska comes straight to mind, as does dabs from Dylan's massive body of work. And there's just something rural and tingly in that southern gothic vain to be found in Howe's "Was Is A Big Word", and, for me, the Cormac M. vibe gets summoned again and again in "Horses Coming Again" (probably different for everyone else). Film-wise, Malik's Badlands comes closest to me. Most shameful mistake of my haphazard college life. Professor asked if any of us liked O'Connor. I raised my hand. He asked which story. I said, "A Hard Man Is Good To Find." Took me a few seconds to figure out why everyone was laughing. Oh well.

tHom, I'm a fan of Wiseblood (the book and the movie, though the music in the movie drives me nuts), so perhaps this advice will carry no weight, but anyway, my advice is to read the short stories if you haven't already before you dismiss O'Connor and go slowly with them, savoring the dialect, the humor, all of the symbols (got to pay attention to the names of the characters for instance) that she loves to play with that you don't need an advanced degree to recognize. and Cormac. I've seen the cormac / tuscon music scene connection on the backs of Calexico and early Friends of Dean Martinez records and thought perhaps one (or some) of you over that way was in touch with the man and was "in the know". It was worth a shot. I eagerly await the new book.. And, YES!, Suttree! That would be my desert island book, Blaine. As to Bunuel, I started with the Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. That's all I've seen thus far. It is funny and surreal, though not as surreal, perhaps, as the flicks he was making when he was younger and running about with Dali and Lorca and such. The DVD of Discreet comes with a long informative docu about him that shows many clips of other films. I'm glad, tHom, that our Cormac thoughts met up. O'Connor isn't for everyone; I tryed to turn some of my friends onto her but many of their reactions were, I think, similar to yours. Have you ever tried Crews? Harry Crews? Pretty rough stuff, in the southern gothic vein, and some of it is just plain bad. Feast of Snakes is good, but not for the easily, or not so easily, offended. Damn, it's tempting to fly to Tuscon for the almost-new year's weekend. I hate money, or at least my utter lack of it! Sorry to have blabbed so long. Good day, all.

tHom -- good point, I have some very close, music-loving friends who just don't get Giant Sand. C'est la Vie -- it's still a big world and room for everyone. Have you read Everything That Rises Must Converge? May be better than Wiseblood. treygoba -- Steve Wynn's career paralells Howe's in some regards and he's worth diggin into ( a nice guy to boot). My picks are anything he did with the Dream Syndicate; the Danny & Dusty record he did with Dan Stuart (any one know what he's up to?) and friends is in the Rolling Thunder vibe; the Gutterball albs are flat out great. Wynn's solo stuff is harder to gauge -- I'd lean toward Flourecsent and the new one as best picks. On a similar tangent, track down Russ Tollman -- another great writer.

tHom (where the wise blood won't flow):
Blaine, your mention of O'Connor has resuscitated a personal enigma that I thought I'd put to rest some time ago. Have you ever addressed yourself to the work of an artist who comes highly recommended by those you trust, anticipating great things, only to find the magic just isn't there for you? Such has been my experience where O'Connor is concerned. I understand she's supposed to have a dark current of humour in the mix somewhere, but I just don't get it I suppose. Likewise with Houston's film version of Wise Blood; I find it unwatchable. But for some reason I always think of Trickle Down System as being a kind of soundtrack to that movie, something to do with the line about take off your uniform brings to mind Brad Dourif returning home at the start of the film. Don't ask me why ...

I had the chance to see Steve Wynn at the Metropolitian Museum of Art but I didn't have the dough, I stood outside the theatre doors and caught little snipets as the ladies in their fur coats went in and out...the art work of coarse, kept me company and afterwards I mediatated in the Temple of Dendur......I paid a nickle to get in. Hey, you Tucsonians and anyone else who ever played there, what happened to Hotel Congress.....a.k.a. "Hotel California" by the Eagles?

I've never listened to Wynn and his various incarnations before. Help me folks. What other Wynn/Dream Syndicate albums do I pursue? Are the other albums as jaw-dropping as this? (or maybe I'm just starving for honest music here in the wasteland of Oz)

...digging into the Cormac McCarthy angle, Suttree is a great book (esp if you have a weakness for Faulkner or O'Connor). PaulK -- speaking of the Holy Modal Rounders, there was GS SXSW gig in Austin some years back where Joey & John backed the great Michael Hurley -- very cool. They were the perfect low-key rhythm section. Maybe someday we can see them play w/Mose Allison. And I seem to recall someone recording the evening's proceedings(Was the flyer for this gig later the cover of the first? bootleg series disc?) -- less than perfect memory here, but I think the lineup was Giant Sand, Mr. Hurley, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Vic Chestnutt, Syd Straw, Peter Holsapple & Susan Cowsill and Chris Whitley -- sometimes in various combinations? Quite a nice evening in a theatre with a slanted floor. Poot -- good point, Howe & the late Mr. Sahm def share a breadth/diversity/love of all musics. It helps they both jump around on instruments, maybe they both share a need to be challenged and a desire not to be bored. James -- can you suggest the best Bunuel movies to start with??

Hi everyone! So cool to be back in the casa again with my 'hind set in front of the computer. As long as the movie thread is somewhat alive, I just returned from the Santa Fe Film Festival--and nearly disappeared for a week inside darkened theaters. Saw some fine flicks, so track 'em down if you can..."Possible Loves" (Brazil) and the latest from the director of Diva called "Mortal Transfers" (soooooooooo dark and funny!). Two utterly incredible films came from Asia: "What Time Is It There?" (Taiwan), which had a cameo from Jean Pierre Leaud in it, and from mainland China "Devils On The Doorstop," which was just an amazing piece of work (all copies were recently seized in China and the film has been banned there). There was also a Canadian film shot on digital video about the Innuit indians--that just goes to show that incredible and epic films can be made with tiny tiny budgets. Anyway, good to be back in Sandland, and so good too to see Howe's name in the lower case here too!!! Mitch

One's standing in the aisle way, Two more at the door, We got to get inside there, Before they kill some more. Time is runnin' out, let's roll. Time is runnin' out, let's roll. No time for indecision, We got to make a move, I hope that we're forgiven, For what we gotta do. How this all got started, I'll never understand, I hope someone can fly this thing, Get us back to land. Time is runnin' out, let's roll. Time is runnin' out, let's roll. No one has the answers, But one thing is true, You got to turn on evil, When it's comin' after you. You got to face it down, And when it tries to hide, You got to go in after it, And never be denied. Time is runnin' out, let's roll. Let's roll for freedom, Let's roll for love, Goin' after Satan, On the wings of a dove. Let's roll for justice, Let's roll for truth, Let's not let our children, Grow up fearful in their youth. Time is runnin' out, let's roll. Time is runnin' out, let's roll. Time is runnin' out, let's roll.

Maybe the GS braintrust would consider a similar remedy. I think we are all gonna end up the answer to a real obscure trivia question here. Moving on -- Best new albs: Dylan and Lucinda. Gigs: Blue Rodeo, Wilco and hopefully Lucinda tomorrow night. Does anyone know if Neil Young has a new alb in the works??

Patti, so glad the GH arrived safely. And, Guni, that vampire flick for the island. Hmmmmmmmm...Vampire's Kiss was kinda funny and with a nice psychological edge, if I remember right. But I'd have to reach back for the Hammer Horror flicks I loved as a kid--Horror Of Dracula, with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.

Hello everyone. I've been away from home and computer for the last few days, and so have missed some of the drama and excitement on the comments board. I still think the best thing to do is simply not respond in any fashion to you-know-who (of course, in a roundabout way I'm doing that now). When I read her "Patty" post I knew it was her, and I'm sure everyone else here did too. Really, I hate to see people bailing out of here because of Osama Bin Avalon. I find almost all of her comments--no matter what name she is using, or whether she's apologizing or attacking--to be very transparent. It is disturbing at times, I know, but to let her ultimately disrupt our ebb & flow here is to give her way much more credit than she deserves. Concerning her Glum photo, I'd say just get rid of it completely--for no other reason than to blot her and her name and her creation from being seen by lots of people. Some things are better off being tossed into the artistic trashcan, some people too.

concert moments of the year (in no particular order): the waterboys: 'we will not be lovers' and mike scott's somewhat kitschy but effective orgasm-simulating 10 minutes+ guitar-solo in 'the pan within'. melvins: start-stun-stare-cope-end. slowly close the mouth. white noise and a grinning constantly for days. steve wynn + the miracle 3: small club gig ('knust', for those who care)! what a great, direct, sound! almost had forgotten about this feeling. 5 people on a 12 qm stage. chris cacavas! neil young: cortez the killer. made me forget a stupid talkative (does one say so?)audience. the handsome family: weightless gospel-elvis. (the 'knust' again, btw.) is that all there is? that's what I remember.

Well, I've been very happy with the company I've kept these past months. With them my ears have been exposed to the likes of Guided By Voices, Wilco, The Posies, Yo La Tengo, Wilco, Stephen Malkamus, Robyn Hitchcock, The Strokes, Rufus Wayneright, Red House Painters, X covers, that have truly been the awakening and departure I needed from my sad repetitious ungrowing collection of music previous. I can say that it is all due to a great friend of mine that I will truly miss with my move to California coming closer with every day. I have seen some great shows: U2, Dave Matthews, Neil, Pearl Jam, Tracy Chapman, REM, Emmylou, Daniel Lanios, GBV, Red House Painters, Wilco. It's been a good year with many more to come....

Not the best films ever, but the films I'd like to take to a desert island at the moment - Blade Runner, Blood Simple, Run Lola Run, Amores Perros. Other good stuff recently - American Beauty, Run Lola Run, Ratcatcher, Crouching Tiger (though I'm not sure that would repay repeated viewings). Also 'Bombay' which is Hindi (complete with song and dance sequences) but also a serious and powerful film about intercommunal rioting. BTW Breathless is Godard not Truffaut. His 'Bande à Part' (recently rereleased) is remarkably good fun for a French New Wave film and inspired the dance scene in Pulp Fiction.

Thanks, james s, for the confirmation. And a fine call on the Diary of A Country Priest. May I suggest also A Man Escaped - perhaps appropriate for the desert island, although my favourite Bresson movie may be L'Argent. Decisions, decisions ...

The best g.s. album might be Chore. Center of the Universe and Dreaded Brown Recluse get the most play (esp. center). That's a great question btw. I've seen "Waiting for Guffman" a zillion times, but I don't think it's one of the "best" movies on my list. Is it fluff (drivel) vs. deep impact? I think Apocalypse Now is one of the "best" movies, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to watch it repeatedly. Ditto for Crumb. Steve Martin's "The Jerk" otoh... I can't listen to Jeff Buckley because of the association(s), yet I'd rate "Grace" as one of the best of the 90's (or any decade). Ditto for Nirvana. As we approach the magazine/critics barrage (garbage), maybe the distinction should be between "favorite" vs. "best" vs. "influential"?

allow me to throw Lolita (the SK version), and Gandhi into the pile. Yes tHom, I sometimes find I don't watch "the best" as often as my "favorites", for example, I wouldn't say Dazed and Confused is the "best", but I've seen it more times than any of the "desert island" flicks I've listed so far (except Holy Grail, which I've seen too many times to count). Office Space was perty durn funny too. and all Coen brother's movies... the old black & white & french Diary of a Country Priest, Starlight Memories,...

Date: Wed Dec 5 06:07
tHom (the land where the bong tree grows):
I thought I'd have a stab at the five movies thing but I'm useless at picking favourites. I think I'd definitely include This Is Spinal Tap in the desert island milieu - you can watch it again and again. But this list thing raises a question that's troubled me for some time: If you had to name your "favourite" gs record, would it be the same album that you'd refer to as the "best" - and would either of these be the one you actually played the most? I know for my part that these criteria would probably result in three different albums. If a stranger to gs asked me for their "best", I'd probably name Chore; if pushed for my "favourite" I'd name several at once to confuse the interrogator; and yet clinical tests have shown that I play The Love Songs more often than any other. Is this just me or is it a common phenomenon?

Jazz albums? I'd definitely go for 'Kind of Blue' or 'Milestones' over 'Sketches of Spain' - Miles is much better unarranged: jazz isn't classical music, and anyway Rodriguez (Concerto d'Aranjuez) was the Spanish fascists' court composer. Books: best book of last century in my view was Toni Morrison's Beloved. Otherwise for entertainment Pynchon's hard to beat (as well as allegedly being a Sand fan) maybe Gravity's Rainbow. Anyone here read Mark Danielewski's House of Leaves? Not a great book but a highly entertaining and intriguing one. How about this desert island has a film projector and you can take five films?

James James, I've tried to narrow my list down to four or five, but just can't get there. But I can tell you who'd I want: Coltrane, Mingus, Monk, Davis, and likely Django Reinhardt (counts as jazz, right?). Bookwise, I have no idea. Day of the Locusts by Nathenael West has been a favorite since childhood, and The Moviegoer too. Probably though, it'd be something by Endo or Kawabata. Teach Us To Outgrow Our Madness by Oe is a good enough choice, I suppose. By the way, I thought whoever picked Robert Frank's The Americans was a fine choice.
