Important discographical question: Which came first: RAMP on Amazing Black Sand (AB-CDE-02) or on Restless (7 72599-2). The answer should be obvious, but it's not. The date on the Restless CD is 1991. The ABS release says 1991 on the inside booklet, but 1992 on the back cover! Did the band re-release RAMP on their own label after Restless gave up on them? Help!

Hey everybody, happy holiDAZE. Just want to report that I finally got a copy of the European release of HISSER and was knocked out by its superior graphics, and the extra tracks! Well worth the price of importing it direct from an Internet record company (cost me about $18 total). Also, I am amused by the first Ebay auction this week of "Core Of Echantment." I wonder if it'll go higher than what anyone can purchase it for direct?

Hoi, just heard a song from Hisser on a Belgian Radio station. Don't ask me which song exactly, but I can recommend the station, if you live in or around that country. It's called Radio 21 or R21. Although its in French, and I can't understand that, its my favorite radio station. They just play good music and they made a huge impression on me tonight with that song. If you like that station too, drop me a note. You should be quite in my vicinity (musically/geographically). Frank

D: I would like to know, if your current Giant Sand tour will also lead you to Austria. Still think of Fruit child large as a Great Thing. Hey Greg Haldane, just to let you know that I envy you a lot for moving to Bisbee. I was there once, in January for a night and a day. The most astounding thing about this ol' minig town to me was, that it is a town of artists. I talked to a photographer there and he said, some 750 (!)artists had settled there in the last three years or so. Hippies are there, too ;-). And then, there is this old RV park outside the city center (you gotta pass that big mining area and then I think it's somewhere on your left). You can rent a shiny airstream for 15 bucks something per nite. Certainly one thing you could do to escape the M.hype... Enjoy!:-)) Hank

I'm contemplating a move from the rainy pacific northwest back home to the desert - specifically to the high desert town of Bisbee, Arizona. I've got a decent job lined up, which is hard to come by in that part of the world. Since Bisbee is definitely in the realm of Giant Sand and since Giant Sand fans have terrific taste I'm asking for your advice/comments. I'd also like to weigh in with my favorite Giant Sand songs - Underground Train (because it's about an event that inspired a political awakening in me), Trickle Down System (just because) and Wonder (because I have a big ol' crush on Victoria Williams).

I wonder if Howe & Company would like to make a few comments on this forum about the last, recently completed Giant Sand tour of the West Coast? I know that a few of us were fortunate enough to see the band (and others may get a chance to hear it...any live tapes in circulation?), and it would be mighty fine to hear from the band on whether they thought they were successful, fun, grueling, torturous, sublime, skinny, creative, drug-addled, groupie-ridden, or just plain business as usual. No harm in asking, anywayz.

Nuno (nunoantonio@yahoo.co.uk):
Well, it's like asking the pope to choose his fav passage from the bible, but here it goes: Despite agreeing with most of Torben's selections(especially "Paved road to Berlin"), I'll have to go for "ARTISTS" as my number one choice, closely followed by "Faithful", "Almost the politician's wife" and "Trickle down system". As for my fav cover, "Is that all that is" from the wonderful LOVE SONGS shines just a tad brighter than the others. It's not fair, is it? - I mean, I could just sit here all day and come up with dozens of other gems(like "Happenstance" or "Always horses coming" just to name a few), great songs that probably won't even get a mention!! - But I guess is a good way for the fans to pay tribute to Howe & CO's brilliance and eclecticism. Long live GIANT SAND!!! ciao for now - NUNO

It would be hard for me to pick just one - I guess I'd have to go for "Searchlight", "Sandman" & "Paved Road To Berlin" from the wonderfull "Long Stem Rant" album. Not to mention "Stuck" from "Center Of The Universe". "Shiver" sends shivers down my spine. "I'm aware there's a world out there"....."Black Venetian Blind". I guess I'm already disqualified for going beyond the limit of one favorite track.

Green on red and Giant Sand were starting out around the same time in tucson(not a big place).Green on red was signed by slash and phonogram and got more attention, but I think there was mutual influence.Dan Stuart sounds like Neil and covers him.But both these guys love Neil.Whatever you think of his music,Neil Young has always been a rebel.(listen to "tonight's the night")

Date: Sun Nov 7 23:29
tommy gailer (tgailer@yahoo.de):
Monica, you`re absolutely right, Chris Cacavas played on a few Giant Sand albums & there are some other fellows too: Steve Wynn with Dream Syndicate. I`m sure Howe likes Neil Youngs attitude & the music, maybe he was influenced by neil too. But (sorry neil-fans) i can`t hear too much of neil`s music in Howe Gelbs song. You can hate me for that, but Neil Young is far away from Howe`s songs (maybe exept the lyrics), melodies & progressive process! This weekend i listened to Neil Young`s "Freedom": it would be his first record i like, if he wouldn`t have a typical dilemma: the songs are too long, they got boring after 4min. If you guys are looking for good songwriters, try: Elliott Smith, Jeff Tweedy, Steve Wynn, Gomez, Deus, Pavement .... So take that as a try to get a little life in this boring board, maybe to try to discuss....if it my little english allows...

Stephen M. H. Braitman (braitman@mindspring.com):
Regarding Howe and Neil: Rock critics are notoriously lazy and tend to take the easy way out of describing something. Remember when everyone said Tom Verlaine played guitar just like John Cipollina? Well, somewhere in the mix of sounds that is Giant Sand there is a guitar sound that reminds critics of Neil Young's guitar sound. Hence, "Howe Gelb is like Neil Young." It's just an easy tag for critics to use so they can box the band into a nice safe niche. To illustrate this to the extreme, in the early '80s I managed a band called Times Beach. The lead singer, Mariana Trench, was a rather large-form woman. Because of that, critics called her another "Deborah Iyall of Romeo Void." Only because she was fat! Otherwise, there was no relation, musically or otherwise. .............Critics can be stupid and cruel. I know. I am one myself.

regarding howe and neil young, howe told me that he originally modeled himself after neil.that was a long time ago and any giant sand fan would probably agree that howe resembles no one.but I think howe's neil influence is big .both neil and G.S. release music that industry types consider unreleasable.they both ignore what people think they should do.after my 1st G.S. show in austin in 94',a big time manager said to me "howe's great but he keeps releasing his demo tapes".he did'nt get it.I'd rather listen to giant sand demos than just about anything.

J.-C. Brochard (jc.brochard@wanadoo.fr):
It took a long long time to reach my home, but I finally got my copy of "Chore of enchantment" about a month ago, and of course I've been listening to it a lot since, but always with this mixed feeling of enjoying the record and regretting at the same time that it isn't given the proper release it deserves... To me, "Chore" seems like a natural progression from both "Glum" and and the OP8 album, but, contrary to some of the other opinions expressed, I can't hear a specific influence on it from the Calexico records. I quite enjoy the versions of the 3 songs previously released by Howe ("Temptation", "Satellite" and "Way to end the day". I'm especially glad to hear a full version of "Way to end the day" : the "Short" version on "Hisser" was so short that I thought I'd never hear the full lyrics to the songs and I was forced to record that song several times in a row on a cassette to have a version of an acceptable length. So far, my favourite songs are "Dusted", "Shiver", "No reply", "X-tra wide", "Raw", "Astonished",... At times I feel I could tell those songs that have a distinctive Memphis feel, at others I'm not so sure (Howe, please remember after the tour that you had in mind to publish the liner notes, artwork and maybe lyrics to the album...!). I'm pretty sure that when I saw Giant Sand live in Germany in 1997, the band played a very good and very electric version of "Dusted" : the "Jesus might return" chorus reminded me that. Maybe we can expect one such version when the "Official bootleg vol. 2" is released. I had been thinking that the cancellation of the release of "Chore" might have been a fatal setback for Giant Sand. But now, with the October US tour and the announcement of the release of the bootleg, I'm reassured ! Now, let's hope for a record deal and a European tour!

Hi Thomas, But you're so right the structure in the music really is very important and yes alle the changing structures in many GS song is really great. It tends to make the music so much more exciting. Like you I really also have to "squeeze out the sparks" of my mind sometimes to catch the lyrics.

Hi It's definately Sofie Albertsen on the cover of Glum. Thomas you're right Neil Young is a bit more "straight" than Howe, however Neil is still one of my all time faves. I think Neil has written some of the most important song in folk & rock music ever (along with Howe that is). In an interview on danish national radio Howe was asked about musicians he liked and felt somewhat musically related to and Howe mentioned Neil Young an at some point in that interview Howe says "Neil's good. Even when he is bad he is good" that's kinda how I feel about Neil and Howe for that matter. TH

Thanks Steve, for that articel...but you can hang me on the next tree, i can`t see much common between giant sand & neil young. I listened again & again to the last 10 Neil Young CD`s & i can`t help, this guy is boring me to death. The songwriting of Giant Sand is much more complicated. Not one record sounds the same like the other (i can`t hear too much difference between youngs cd`s). And Giant Sand (Howe) made big progressions from album to album. Neil youngs songwriting is the same like 20 years ago.Very early Giant Sand broke through that verse/chorus/verse/chorus concept and are even variing evry verse part, what means they play every verse a little bit different. Best example: "Stuck" from "Center of the Universe". I think Neil young is a very overrated musician, but i stil like to hear him better than any "charts" stuff...

Stephen M.H. Braitman (braitman@mindspring.com):
You might be interested in this review of the Giant Sand performance that took place in Berkeley, CA, Oct. 16, at the Starry Plough (a small bar/restaurant/night club with decidedly radical leanings). This excerpt leaves out the Sally Timms and Freakwater parts. East Bay Express, Oct. 22, 1999 No Reason to Be Pissed Off by Derk Richardson ... Sally Timms...was opening a Starry Plough bill packed with underground rock icons including Chicago's Freakwater and the resolutely unpredictable Howe Gelb and his Tucson-based band Giant Sand. Punk's DIY aesthetic gave the night a populist feel, as band members mixed with the crowd and joined each other on stage, yet nary a glimmer of rage and very few nods to three-chord rock 'n' roll cropped up in the three satisfying sets that ended shortly after 1 a.m. ... Focus was not the issue with Giant Sand. It never has been, ever since Pennsylvania-born Howe Gelb moved to Tucson and formed the Giant Sandworms in the mid-1970s. The godhead of a musical scene that includes Calexico (with current Giant Sand drummer John Convertino and bassist Joey Burns), OP8 (with Lisa Germano), and the Friends of Dean Martinez, Gelb proves that, a la Captain Beefheart, the desert spawns a very strange music. In Gelb's case it's a personal amalgam of Neil Young and Velvet Underground, paranoid grunge, parched minimalist dreamscapes, and half-spoken baritone vocals that bear more than slight resemblance to those of Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen. At the Plough, Gelb led his current quartet though an hour-plus set that was even more discursive than Giant Sand's new CD, Chore of Enchantment (something of a comeback after a five-year hiatus). Coaxing barroom piano and eerie organ sounds from a Korg keyboard, plucking jagged riffs from an aocustic guitar and twanging surf, western, and fragmented free jazz lines from his Gretsch electric, Gelb made such concepts as pitch, meter, coherent lyrics, and complete songs irrelevant. While the crowd watched intently as if waiting for something to happen, Gelb pounded out "Romanian country music," noodled a snippet of "Lay Down Sally," invited Timms up to sing a ragged medley of "I Can't Help IT If I'm Still In Love With You" and "Tennessee Waltz," played a tango instrumental worthy of Brave Combo or NRBQ, and wove together Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" and "Lay Lady Lay," throwing in a bit of "The Weight" for good measure. Although the crowd thinned out a bit after Giant Sand's curious and delightfully indulgent ramble, those remaining were treated to 75 minutes of alt-country the way it was menat to be played and sung... (etc. etc.) ---- The only comment I'll make is that the set Giant Sand played the previous night, in San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, was completely different in substance and spirit. Completely different songs. Completely different mood and jangle. Both nights great. --Stephen

Tommy, the Crocodile is in Seattle. The lineup - Howe, John and Joey. They were joined by a fourth fellow that played guitar and occasionally the organ. I can't remember his name - Lucas or Nick? Some of the Freakwater (I think) people joined in too. I'm even more sketchy on the song list …Loving Cup...Yer Ropes…Shiver…Extra Wide…Wasted…I'm so lonesome that I could cry…a couple of musical interludes...happy birthday. Yer Ropes showed up again as a medley. They also played a great train song. It sounded familiar but I don't know the title. The highlight was Howe's birthday Jack O'Lantern. It was adorned with celery and candles. The set ended with Howe sprawled out over John's drum set. Like I said, a good time was had by all. Next time I'll take notes. By the way Sally Timms put on a pretty sweet show too. Greg.

spoink + cranky (owom@aol.com):
Well, "Chore" has been in the CD player pretty much non stop now for a good few weeks. Why can't I take it out of the machine and give myself a rest from listening to it? Because it works....it grooves...it just pulls me in from the first moment - Overture is just intriguing: it grabs me - it's impossible to press play on the CD player and then walk out of the room or start a conversation - it builds suspense, every time I listen I'm drawn in, waiting for that moment when it ends and the beautiful bass line leads me into one Howe's most engaging vocals. I just 'don't know, what to do'. "Temptation of Egg" is simply a revelation! One of the great Giant Sand Tracks, realised and evolved magically from the embryo that lives on Hisser. God I love this album. The whole album follows suit - a perfect union of that sleazy Calexico sound and Howe's very own noise that just mixes things up so unpredictably - there are ultra slick sounding tunes, raw edgy tunes remeniscent of the way Howe finds his way through a melody or a riff to a fully formed song in concert and things that drift from one to the other - Under a Punishing Sun. There's 1972, followed by "Egg" - how much more variety and edginess do you want? "Shiver" makes me do just that - I guess there must be 'something in the water'. "Satellite" is a perfect piece of Giant Sand of old - heavy drums and guitars swirling and crashing and washed with beautiful vocals. "Bottom Line Man" whisks me back to a night in London with Howe and Bob Neuwirth. Howe flicking through his note book and digging out the beginnings of a song. Here we are with the completed masterpiece. I love it. 'Three cheers for Madame Bottom Line' ...Three cheers for Mr Gelb. Shrine closes it all up, and makes me reach for 'Worried Spirits' - I guess that's what it's there for - so that we don't forget one of the greatest blues-men that ever lived. (and whose music still lives, LOUDER than ever) I just can't imagine what happened with V2. They signed Giant Sand and they waited for Howe and the band to complete an album. What more could they have wanted? What could they have possibly asked for that has not been delivered? It's got Giant Sand of old, sounds of Calexico, lots of new ideas and musical avenues to travel down. This album feels comfortable - it feels good, as though it's Giant Sand doing their thing - without hindrance or worry. it reminds me of Dylan's Time Out of Mind - the perfect blend of all the things that we've heard from Giant Sand/Calexico/OP8 over recent years, just as TOOM is a blend of classic Dylan, classic blues and folk. It's the perfect new Giant Sand album as far as I'm concerned - another beautiful step along the road. I'm sure glad to be along on the journey. Can't help but feel sad that V2 didn't feel the same......more people should hear this album. Martin McGowan Birmingham England

so sweet and thick. criticism does boing like sonar. so happy to have you have it. finally. too many years in between things. time to start shoveling this stuff out of the house again. yep. still in sydney for another day i think. at some point in the not-too-distant we'll get the lyrics up somewhere here on the web site. we'll put up the art that was supposed to accompany the record as well. that is our beloved rainer playing slide at the end of the record. and that might be robert plant mentioning that its rainer in the control room there at the end. and that would be juliana hatfield singing on temptation of egg. sofie did the singing on shiver and way to end the day. jim dikinson did play piano on astonished and rode shotgun on a few more. professor john parish plunked and spoinked on satellite and altered the shape of things in the time space continuim all over the map. kevin salem did more then you know. it took a year and a half to complete, but only 5 weeks of actual real studio time, even if you count the snowy cabin up in the wintery woods. but the idea of it never seeing the light of day is kind of wonderful. a lovely work for the sake of work's sake. must be like zen i reckon.

After 12 years of listening and lusting for "Giant Sand" I find it difficult to address their records as separate from the whole extended family of things Giant Sand. They have aged wonderfully over the years and have always allowed us to remain quite intimate with them as they roam the world and paint their impressions of it in ways quite unique and diverse. I don't know if one can critique Giant Sand. (To me, they seem to operate outside of that context.) It's like trying to critique a river. It just flows and goes where it will, sometimes with serenity and at other times with abandon. We are quite fortunate to have the oportunity to experience them. Thank you Howe, John, Joey, and all. so, what about chore? didn´t know what to expect, but when you hear it...just what you expected (& hoped for). very laid back and with a sad sad undercurrent (though i didn´t listen to the lyrics yet) somewhat mildered by the neat production (which in turn is somehow mildered by the tape recorder feedbacks and other excentricities...). howe sometimes mumbling like lou reed in his best moments. apparent absence of hits (or even catchy melodies) making it certainly not a record with mass appeal (is it that what bothered v2??). but who really wanted to hear giant sand in heavy rotation? (i´m still always quite surprised hearing calexico on the radio). bit sparse info on personnel etc. on these promos by the way. so when next sitting in some australian cybercafe, tell us more about the chore (although you might think more about future than past stuff at the moment). anyway. thanks a lot. we love it. markus (& katja & marlene)

Greg Haldane (greg_haldane@urscorp.com):
I'm a big fan of Giant Sand and I'm somewhat prone to hyperbole so I' m going to do my best to tone down my review of "Chore of Enchantment." -------- After a half dozen listens I think that it is probably the best Giant Sand album to date - high praise. After the newness wears off I'll have to reassess. It is certainly their most coherent album. The music, arrangement and production are incredible. The twang is much subtler. You have to listen very carefully to hear the lonesome whistle of the train. It's been a long and good journey from "Valley of Rain." Change is good. Giant Sand has grown as a band. Howe, John and Joey your musicianship has reached new heights. ---------Obviously V2 spent a lot of money on this album. Were they disappointed with the results? Had they ever listened to Giant Sand before? Of all the Giant Sand albums this is probably their most commercially viable. I guess that I don't really know what to think other than the people making the decisions at V2 are knuckleheads -three cheers to Madame Bottom Line (listen to the album). I really hope that the album does eventually get released and that Giant Sand keeps on keeping on. Thanks for the tasty Rainer morsel at the end of the album.

Hi Howe, I only read your offer here on Thursday, 19 August, and sent off the money immediately. It should reach you some time next week, I hope that will do. (As far as further enchantment is concerned, I've been dreaming of a 10 volume (at least) Giant Sand live recording series.) Aaron, some time back you asked about Calexico's "Superstition Highway". I got a tape of that name I bought at a Giant Sand concert in Munich in '95 or '96. It's a true hisser, the songs are barely discernible under the tape hiss and rumble, though what you hear of them is great. It's a regular Sony HF60 tape with a xeroxed cover just listing the tracks. (I'll copy it for you if you like.) Anyone looking for "Goods & Services", "Glum", or "Purge & Slouch"? Try Raffmond Mailorder in Germany: http://www3.pair.com/raffmond/discount.htm. It's a current list, they may still have copies. Anyone interested in the "Official Bootleg Series Vol. 1 CD"? I got one to trade (maybe against the mysterious "(Upside)Down Home" CD). Everyone European: A good and fast (though rather expensive) way to send money to the US is an International Money Order through Western Union. I once sent a check, and it caused a lot of trouble (the receiver's bank tried to charge an enormous fee). Stefan

Hi Markus und Axel. And Howe I got an e-mail from Edgar at Blue Rose (Germany) and he mentioned something about some german label working seriously on the release. Hi Howe, good music will always find it`s way, especially yours. Torben is right: Glitterhouse is a pretty good label for germany & it`s owner Reinhard Holstein is a music-maniac. They just signed "16 Horsepower". Their adress is: mailorder@glitterhouse.com. They should not forget that Giant Sand stil has a lot of fans in germany. I listen to your music since 1989 and it wouldn`t be the same world for me without your songs. Greetings Tommy

Torben D. Hansen (td.hansen@get2net.dk):
Hi Howe, Sorry about the trouble with your label (former label). Although I don't think they made a good job in the distribution of "Hisser". When it was finally released here in Europe it was nowhere to be found. And I heard it was only released in Scandinavia. Is this true???? Anyway that's not important now. For the realease of the upcoming CD (I don't want to believe that there's a possibility of it not being released in 1999)how about Russ and Pat's new label "Innerstate" they're bound to be interested in making a Giant Sand release. They both know the quality of your material. There are also some extremely fine german labels around éx. Glitterhouse, but I don't know if they have any distribution in the US.?? Another thing is the "(Uside)Down Home" tour cd by any chance still available anywhere???? I was counting on it being re-relaesed. Well I'm off again and I wish you all the best. Torben

Dear Howe, sorry to hear about the V2 snafu. I cant believe those jerks dropped you. Isn't there a bunch of other labels out there who want GS? What about those fellas at Smells Like Records? They have a great roster and I know they're re-releasing a ton of old Lee Hazelwood albums, so you know they got taste. I dunno, it would just be a shame if the new record fell by the wayside. I'm down with what Greg said, anything that us fans can do...

Date: Sun Aug 8 17:57
Greg Haldane (greg_haldane@urscorp.com):
Howe, I hope everything works out for the best and that "Chore of Enchantment" is released. The thought of facing this bleak musical climate without the glimmering hope of a new Giant Sand album is too depressing. Your passion for music is obvious. I've listened to your music for about 12 years now and I want you to know that I've savored every last drop of it - the good, the bad and the ugly. Whenever I get homesick for the dessert and Tucson, which is quite often, I play a little Giant Sand and it takes me home to - warm star-filled summer nights; the smell of creosote in the air after a thunderstorm; crickets and cicadas; the lovely Santa Catalinas glowing in the moonlight; a mangy coyote caught in a headlight's beam; dead snakes flattened on hot black asphalt; freaky storm-related invasions of flying ants, toads, and tarantulas; bats in the dusky dusk; the barrio; Mi Nidito; and, Mo Udall. Wow, I think that I just talked myself into a trip back home. Let us know if there is anything that we, as your fans, can do to support the band.

howe (howe9t9d9@yahoo.com):
hello folks. i've got a little news. v2 records has decided to drop all things giant sand. hard to say if that's a problem or not. now we will never know. but it'd be good to ship out some of the pre-release full album versions of the new record out at least before the millenium's end. if we decide to press on to officially release this record, then i guess these could be viewed as collectable since there will be only less then 500 out there on the planet. if we decide to just move on and not release it, then they'll be the only evidence of such. i don't know what we'll be doing. but for now, for those of you who check in on this site, you are the only ones who know about this and until we know what we're doing, your the only ones we're offering this new record to. stand by for details.

Finally, a Giant Sand site based on more than speculation and rumour... not that I have anything against speculation and rumour, it's just so... speculative. I'm working on a comprehensive GS profile for my show on CKUW (the University of Winnipeg's college radio station)and am eager to establish a few facts. If anyone can help it would be, well, helpful. Thinl of it as a quiz for GS fans maybe. 1. What year saw the release of Valley of Rain, and on what label did it appear? 2. Were there any GS releases prior to Valley of Rain? 3. What labels carried Ballad of a Thin Line Man, Heartland and Ramp? 4. How many installments of the Official Bootleg Series have there been? 5. What can you tell me about Long Stemmed Rant? 6. When was Steve Wynn's Kerosene Man album released? 7. What exactly was Papy's relation with GS, aside from his contributions to Glum? 8. When, where and how often did Fruit Child Large play out, and is there any FCL recordings floating about? 9. Did Howe have something to do with a Bill & Ted's movie sountrack? 10. Is there any move afoot to rerelease any of GS's back catalogue save for Glum, which is apparently being retooled by OW OM? That's it for the "quiz." By the way, what would it take to get Howe (and company?) up to Winnipeg for a show? The Wpg. Folk Festival is remiss for never having booked GS or any of their offshoot projects. It's a pretty swell event save for the aforementioned perennial ommission - and all the weekend hippies. I saw Howe and Convertino perform in Halifx two years ago literally during a hurricane. When Howe sang "Her kind and hurricanes attract that kind of glamour" it was, you know, unbelievable. The same night Canada was playing the US in the final game of the Canada Cup hockey tournament. The show was at a place called Reflections which normally operated as a gay bar. There were TV's in the joint, but be darned if a gay bar was going to broadcast a hockey game. (As I'm sure your aware, many GS fans are huge hockey fans as well... or maybe not.) Anyway, the hurrican knocked out the CBC's transmission towers so even if the bar had been inclined to play the game hockey fans would've been out of luck. I met a cabbie after Howe's show (on the way to see Scud Mountain Boys at a different venue) and he was so stressed from people freaking out about the CBC being off the air that he warned me he wasn't going to take any guff from me as soon as I got in the cab. I told him I had just seen Giant Sand and there was no way in the world I was going to open up a can of guff on anybody. He asked me what the hell a Giant Sand was. I guess you had to be there

I very truly feel that Giant Sand is one of the most talented music conglomerations around, and find it surprising that there isn't a bigger awareness about them. perhaps it is better this way, perhaps, perhaps. although it is sad that much of the world is unaware of this unique and wonderful grouping of individuals.

When I was 13 years old I lost my left ring finger in a bicycle accident (it got caught in the chain). I always wanted to play the guitar but never figured I would be any good. I saw Howe play at the Palomino in '93 and it literally changed my life and I learned to play the guitar (without the left ring finger of course). I'm now in a band, and making radical rock and roll. Our name is Goose, and we are working on our first CD. Thanks Howe for the inspiration, and maybe we can jam someday if you come to Burbank.

Hi, I've just got on the net and am pleased to see that the Sandmen are better served here than in the printed media. I just got Hisser this week and am just getting my head around it. Keep up the good work and come play in Scotland real soon. cheers

Hi. A while ago I got my hands on one G.Sand "official bootleg", mainly stuff from around the time of purge and slouch. Was wondering about other bootlegs, official or otherwise, live recordings, etc. thanks.

Thank gawd for giantsand.com -- I just got back on-line and am in Gelb heaven. Discovered Howe & Co. last year through the profound Inner Flame and have found every used GS and Gelb CD I can find in the D.C. area (lord knows there are no new copies). Saw Howe open for Freakwater here last year: Howe you are a western desert god in my pantheon like Bob, Vic and Ry. I just found Hisser this weekend: wonderful. I've been spreading the unique Giant Sand/Gelb word ever since Inner Flame and now view Tucson as a holy city. Thanks, Howe. AB

been a fan of Giant Sand for a couple of years. holding down the fort here in Canada. heard that Glum was not being printed anymore. that album (among other GS releases)should be held up as a seminole modern rock torch. anyway, how about some more eastern canadian dates (Montreal/Toronto). by the way Halifax has not been the same since the explosion. take care.

I opened up the show last night, and I had never heard Howe before, except for the Giant Sand record that a friend at work lent me a few days ago. I didn't really like it, so I figured I wouldn't like Howe's live show. I must say that I was VERY pleasantly suprised, and Howe's set was really cool. The guy is cleary very very very brilliant. In addition to a very interesting looking vintage Gretsch acoustic guitar, he had two mics and ran one of them through a bunch of effects. He also has a tape player with weird stuff on it (like a Pakistani version of an ABBA song), and a little keyboard. Usually, I hate just about everything I hear, so it was pretty cool to see something really intriguing that I'd never seen before. I probably don't need to describe how his songs sounded here, but I will say that the set was interspersed with weird/funny commentary from Howe, and a verbal spar or two with some loudmouth in the crowd who kept accusing him of sounding like ZZ Top, which I think amused Howe up until just before the end of the set. Of interest were also Eddie Spaghetti's (of the supersuckers) first acoustic show, which was heavily vintage country/western influenced songs, with a heavy dose of humor. Also playing were Chris Ballew (sp?) from the Presidents of The United States of America and Tad from the Young Fresh Fellows doing a goofy Presidents-esque set, with Tad playing a tiny child size drum set.

...the latest trickle down is that Portlandia (1/12/99) is a no go show. At's right -- cancelled.... Howe could you do this? what's up with the rest o' this rummered run around? Hope all's well. We love the Hiss out o' ya! Let's do it again sometime!

it looks like Howe must be doing a west coast tour then. he is also playing in seattle on the 10th at the crocodile. the show is listed as HOWE GELB from Giant Sand, CHRIS BALLEW, from the Tycoons EDDIE SPAGHETTI from the Supersuckers EAN HERNANDEZ from Sicko. Not sure if they are all together, or each doing solo sets. I know Eddie is from Tucson too, so who knows. I do know that being able to go to both the portland and seattle show will be a blast, and then flying down to SF to see calexico the next weekend will make a great January! -Erik

Howe will be performing Thursday 1/7/99 at the Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco. J.C. Hopkins opens the show at 10:00 PM. With Calexico in town on 1/16 this looks to be a good month for Bay Area Giant Sand fans. Come one, come all.
