What's it been now well over 1 year since Op 8 toured and the last Giant Sand tour is almost a year longer ago. Well I'm looking foreward to the next Giant Sand CD (I heard roumors of one) and a tour would be just great. Best wishes TDH

Hello all. It has been a pleasure to meet so many people from this list. Let me remind you all of my free mix tape that I send to people who visit my web site. http://hometown.aol.com/chipashley Since my last post, the number of tapes sent out has reached over 100. On this installment, you will hear Howe Gelb sing "Explore You." Thanks v2 for releasing that wonderful cd.

Howe Don't know if you remember me. I interviewed you by phone for the Sunday Times here in London about 3 years back. Also we had a brief conversation standing next to my small green car when you did a very strange solo gig in the summerhouse of the back garden of some posh English aristocrats near Reading a couple of years back. I got Hisser in Rough Trade here about a month back and I'm keen to review it in the paper - but they need to know it's available so they can offer it through their mail order thing and nobody at V2 here in London seems to know of its existence or understand how it came to be in the country. How was it distributed here - by who? Given all the good press for OP8 and the fact that Calexico are doing really well here you'd think they'd be able to raise some interest in Hisser if they could be bothered. If you can help me out here I'll run a piece on it. Happy Xmas Stewart Lee

Missed Howe at Rainbo too. And I live right around the farkin' corner. Saw show at Lounge Ax this summer tho' - just Howe, guitar, foot-petal, keyboard, sequencer, and milk crate. Dandy good show. Friend (not a Sand/Gelb fan) thought it "self-indulgent" however. I didn't try to explain.

Well dang... After many several years, biding and waiting for reappearing Howe, it seems to have came to pass while I was blinking. Was there really a show at the Rainbow Rm. oct.28? Did any one go? Sad to miss the Hiss. Back to mopin' and hopin' for full Sand return someday. Yup.

As a Jew growing up in the Midwest, it's not often that I've had a chance to connect with the American desert. Not unless you count going on family vacations to a "dude ranch" outside of Wickenberg, AZ. (Yup, really.) Thanks for giving me a taste of your Southwest, all spicy and syrupy and nothing like a suburban taqueria. Hisser, The Black Light and Slide have made my 1998. (I'm secretly hoping for an OP8 sequel, too.)

Howdy Howe, I just got Hisser today. Cool and ghostly. I'm a neighbor to the East - New Mexico. (Santa Fe) Sand hasn't played NM in some time, huh? Guess I'll have to wait till SXSW. Sure hope you get a better venue than last time. Anyway, I do enjoy Hisser and I'm looking forward to the next Giant Sand CD. If you get the chance, check my web site - the only music site on the web with its own True Crime section. swt

I just recently discovered Giant Sand through Calixico and love both, along with Hisser. I just wanna say everything I have come by, including a nice used copy of Glum, which I understand is out of print, is incredible. I am from New Mexico and am stuck now in Indiana. Thank God for this beautiful music ala desert/alt.country/whatever. I wait anxiously for a new Giant Sand album and if Howe or any of the others reads this just know your music is wafting over the corn of Indiana about right now.

We miss you, cacophonic salutations.

"Hisser" is great. So, so great. The recording is so cool. I'm a faithful devotee to "vibe." um... H.G., this has it all. Desert vibe. Comically my friend and I call it "desert core." Some where professed late one night shortly after drinking alot of beer and listening to the OP8 record for the hundreth time or so. Maybe it came from Craig's recordings at Wavelab or perhaps he got it from you all playing in his warehouse or perhaps it's just some subconcious coloring in of the tuscon expanse... the landscape... hmmm. (I've only been once.) We've been trying to get drum sounds like that for weeks. Nonetheless "hisser" is a great album. Thanks for putting it out. Oh and naturally the songs are great too. especially "explore you" The pedal steel is... woah... how did you record it? Ps if any of you are interested in reading a cool indie recording mag "Tape Op" from up here in Portland, Or. email me and i will give you info. The last issue has an interview with Craig S. of Wavelab fame... mostly about the studio and the recording of the Richard Buckner album "Devotion and Doubt." its a cool little publication dedicated to those that like hiss, trains, old pianos, and beer.

I waited and waited and wrung my hands. I've been curious about what was going on with the band. I learned how to play guitar for myself in the interim, which isn't satisfying to anyone but me. Of course, I don't ever let anyone else here hear. You're all probably wanting me to be quiet by now, so I'll hurry. I'm happy about the site, regardless of the content, or lack of same. Thanks for putting up the lyrics from hisser. I'm happy with that, too. Thanks, Howe.

I have not heard "Hisser" yet although I intend to. I've not bought anything recently by GS. I've just been kind of absent. Love Center and Long Stem. Really creative and inspirational work. Although since I am a Dead Man's Penis I'm not certain how inspiration applys to me. Sincerely, Jim Morrison's Penis

Listened to" Hisser" 5 times today - this is what i've got to say - Propulsion is the worst song Howe has ever done and Explore You is the best song Howe has ever written.

Good to see that giantsand.com is finally here. Now all we need is a bit of content, I guess I am doing my part right now. Anyway, I look forward to sporadically following this site as time permits. Any chance that we could have some web viewable archives of the mailing list. Sometimes, I don't get online for over a month, and it would nice to see what has been said without filling my mailbox beyond capacity. BTW picked up Hisser, great stuff. "Like a Store Front Display" is probably my favorite song at the moment, Howe in a bit of a Crazy Horse mood, but there are plenty of other jewels to get my ears around later. Later, Mark - sunburn@azstarnet.com P.S. Anyone around Tucson give guitar lessons?

I don't know much about alienation through technology, but I do use what can help me be happy! Thanks to the web, I received 'Hisser' here in France only 4 days after its US release, and thanks to the web, I can find here more info about 'Hisser' than is given on the CD cover. Let's just hope someone will have the time to complete and maintain this site... And the next step should be the Calexico concert in Paris with Vic Chesnutt and Lambchp on October 13th... (I have an online-fanzine at this address : http://perso.wanadoo.fr/vivonzeureux/. It's mostly in French, but it does have features about Giant Sand, Grandaddy, Jonathan Richman and others) Keep well. Cheers.

Bulky Low Max (Bulk2000@aol.com):
Sorry, got sucked in by the swirl. It even desires the small fish and the general common lagger like myself. It's big and buff. Don't let it fool you. It's outside doing push-ups as we speak. Thank the good Lord it's giant nature is kind and most likely about to change its coarse course, of course. Old hat - maybe, but much pleasant shade from its brim and can't be filled. The kind of energy that feels like its a right fit, even if you don't know what it is. You're probably less likely to become dismantled with the other great professional authorities if your not obligated to a stereo territory. Though I will say it's hard not to indulge in a mild drunk chatter for a hoot with the boys if the opportunity is within rooms reach. A G.S. record can be like a brisk walk on crumbling pavement of something that once was, now being covered with new growth on a grey day through pot holes of slush, pebbles of tar above the mother load of coal. As you depart the wooded path, you find yourself smack-dab in some desert in a temperature about 222 degrees. So strap on your seat belt, this next record ain't gonna be a blind sided SWERVE. BULKY
